Nate of Boyz II Men fame shared some interesting info with Fresh!
editor Debi Fee while the popular "Motownphilly" group hung
out in LA. You'll find what he has to say very, very
interesting!
Q: How has success changed Boyz II Men?
Nate: It has changed our lives for the better thanks to the
people liking our music.
Q: How has it affected your lives?
Nate: Well, we don't see our families as much because we
are constantly on the road working. That fact has made us
grow closer as a group. We have become a family and that
adds to our success. We depend on each other. Our
families at home understand. We are reaching for our
goals.
Q: What is the long term goal for Boyz II Men?
Nate: We want to be driving force in the industry. Putting
out songs that people like to hear and making people
happy-that's important to us.
Q: What's the secret to your success?
Nate: I don't know about any secret. We are just singing
the type of music we love. We all went to the High School
of Creating & Perfroming Arts, so we had exposure to
classical, opera, jazz, and all types of music and that is
what you hear in the Boyz II Men music.
Q: I am glad to see "real" singers get hit records. Do you
know what I mean?
Nate: Yes, I do and thank you. We are proud of our music
and it is the music we love.
Q: What's it like to work with Michael Bivins and be a part
of what Biv's musical empire?
Nate: It's a lot of fun. Also, he is not that much older
than we are, so it's like talking to one of your peers. We
have a lot of the same ideas. He gives you a lot of room
in the studio, too, which we really appreciate. He gives
you creative freedom.
Q: For you personally, what's the best part of the
business?
Nate: The performance. We all love to perform and the
people make that happen.
Q: On the other side, what's the worst part of the business
for you?
Nate: Ummmmm......I don't know. For me, there is no bad
part, really bad part that I would call the worst. I guess
I could say we never get enough sleep. And, because we
really sing, it wears on your vocal cords. You have to
take care of your voice.
Q: Do you drink "singer's tea"?
Nate: Yes-tea, honey, and cinammon.
Q: When you get free time, which is rare these days, what
do you like to do?
Nate: I like to play basketball. Actually, any kind of
sport is fine with me. I'm an active guy.
Q: If the music business had not come your way, what do you
think you would be doing right now?
Nate: Right now I would probably be at the University of
the Arts in Carolina studying commercial music.
Q: Would you tell Fresh! readers how important school is to
them and to you?
Nate: I think we are a prime example of staying in school
and the importance of education. All of us stayed in
school and got our high school diploma. We were started
the group before graduation, but actually waited before
really getting into it. We made sure we finished.
Q: I know you are not into drugs.
Nate: Right. Boyz II Men are drug free and alcohol free. We want
to set an example. If you are not into drugs or alcohol,
you have a better chance of acheiving your dreams. We
don't do it and we are having a lot of fun with our lives.
It does nothing for you and you don't need it.
