Just because Shawn's quiet and shy, don't underestimate him. There's a lot more under that easy exterior than meets they eye. If Boyz II Men are looking for a mellow smooth voice to lead one of their silky ballads, they call on Shawn "Slim" Stockman. It's common knowledge to them that Shawn is the man with that soft, velvet voice. He sings so soft and easy, but there's power in his voice. Probably one of the reasons that his voice posseses so much power is because of the fact that Shawn is totally happy with his career. He says, "I love singing. I'm not in it for the money. That's not the major thing for me. I love what I'm doing."
Known for being even-tempered, he gets ticked off when the media digs for some dirt on the group. He grew up in infamous Southwest Philly, a neighborhood that's said to now resemble a war-torn area. Because Shawn is very concerned with living a good quality life, he has moved his family to New Jersey. He's a staunch believer in being true to yourself when it comes to your lifestlye. Shawn gives thanks to God for all of the positive things that have happened to him and the group. He marches to his own beat and doesn't succumb to peer pressure or being one of the crowd.
Shy though Shawn may be, he always places other people's feelings first and foremost in his mind. He enjoys doing good for others anytime he can. Very considerate and extremley well-mannered (as are all the group members), Shawn is always thinking about making other people feel great. He comments, "Our mission is to make people happy and to make them smile through our music. People can relate to our songs. Our songs can help people if they listen to them closely. We want to strive to become better with each album we release so we can gain more listners."
Some things have changed for Boyz II Men since their career has "blown up." Shy Shawn still lives by what are considered old-fashioned principles in today's fast-paced, dog-eat-dog world. He doesn't judge a person outright; Shawn waits until he gets to know them more than just a perfunctory meeting. But the way that some people have acted towards Boyz II Men since their name is has become a household word hurts and baffles Shawn. He explains, "Since the group has done so well, we see people around us changing. That distant cousin, who lives 2,000 miles away whom you haven't seen in a long time, suddenly wants to be your best friend. That 'friend' that you might have ridden on the bus with one time, now wants to be your best friend. We do have some good friends who are still the same towards us. Our success hasn't changed them."
If you're ever looking for Shawn, you'd be wise to look wherever there's a Sega Genesis game being played. You'll probably find him there. He loves to play video games as well as football and basketball. He wants to learn how to play piano and all he can about music in general. Shawn's quite introspective; he likes to take quiet walks and write poems.
Shawn's shy, but you don't dare take him for granted. If you are so inclined to do something so unwise, he's sure to teach you a thing or two!
