Boyz II Men Electrifies Star Lake Crowd

The lawn looked like a refugee camp. More than 12,000 of the 22,683 fans who came out to see Motown's version of the fab four crammed onto the grass to get a glimpse of one of the world's most popular musical groups.

And by the time the evening was over, they had recieved more than a glimpse. What they saw was the most dynamic music stage shows of the summer. Boyz II Men brought their supercharged R&B roller coaster ride to the Coca-Cola Star Lake Amphitheatre Wednesday night and gave a new meaning to the word "showtime."

The Boyz used a unique blend of slick choreography and their famous four-part harmony to wow the sell-out crowd. After an a capella opening of "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday." Michael McCary ripped into the opening of "U Know," from their follow-up CD, II.

Their gyrating dance routines set ladies aged 10 to 40 on fire. They oozed a funky sensuality into songs normally considered ballads.

Wanya Morris' powerful vocal range laid into the lyrics of "Uhh Ahh." The desire and ecstasy in his voice sent heat searing through the crowd.

The emotion continued through the ultra-popular songs, "On Bended Knee," "I'll Make Love to You" and "Water Runs Dry." The songs were accompanied by a live rose toss, emotional pleading on bended knee, of course, and an impromptu strip tease (jacket only) by Nate Morris.

As if singing weren't enough, the Boyz also offered a superior stage show, including advanced pyrotechnics. The biggest production number of the night was the performance of the guys' first hit, "Motownphilly."

Clad in beige, baggy shorts and striped, rugby shirts, the foursome turned in a near 20-minute rendition of the song that included multiple fireworks and evoked a vocal battle of sexes. "Are you guys going to let these ladies beat you that bad," Stockman said. Of course the men in attendance were out numbered about 10,000 to one by women.

It was only fitting the show ended with "End of the Road," off the Cooleyhighharmony recording. The 90-minute show was a fast-paced, energetic ride, and it will be tough to find another show this year to match its intensity and glamour.
