At the height of their success and after four years of constant touring. Philadelphia's Boyz II Men announced at a pre-show press confrence Wednesday that they plan to take the year off from the band after their current tour ends in January.
While the capacity Star Lake Amphitheater crowd of 22,683 had no idea that the foursome had revealed these plans to media, fans still responded as if they'd have another moment like this with their heroes again (even though the Boyz will return a mere two months from now, on September 10).
When a stage scrim lifted to reveal Boyz II Men - an hour after it should have gone up (good thing it wasn't a school night-the roar nearly drowned out the quartet's a cappella intoduction. They would go on to deliver an hour-and-a-half set, one punctuated by adoring screams for such tunes as "U Know," "Vibin'," "On Bended Knee," "I'll Make Love to You," and the hit that started it all, "Motownphilly."
Of course, their street-corner doo-wop harmonies were undeniably worth waiting for, even if there ear-splitting volume and onstage pyrotechnical effects were not.
