Boyz II Men in an Evolution of Love

The quartet Boyz II Men: Shawn Stockman (25), Michael McCary (26), Nathan Morris (26), and Wanya Morris (24) - never seem to let us down. They have been graciously, without a doubt, gone to the end of the road for us. And on several occasions, have made imaginary love to us through their uncompromising, heart-felt, emotional ballads. Their transition from boys to men has been smooth and compelling. And everything they touch turns to platinum; their songs can't escape the top of the charts. After belting out songs like "On Bended Knee", "Water Runs Dry", and "4 Seasons of Loneliness," - we were putty in their hands. They wrote the majority of songs on their latest CD Evolution, which is a testimony to the power of romance.

On April 29, 1998, Boyz II Men kicked off their worldwide tour, which is expected to last over two years. Stockman says, "We try our best to give the best show that we can, and it's going to be nothing different this time. We hope that we please a little more people than we did before. That's all we can do."

Don't be surprised to hear a public service announcement promoting non-smoking at their shows. It is their way to make teenagers more conscious of their decisions. "We're not preaching. We're just basically expressing views and our beliefs on smoking," Stockman says.

There is also a contest associtated with the tour. The winner will be able to hang out with Boyz II Men, go to their shows, and receieve some added surprises.

Boyz II Men have broadened their horizon by translating their songs from English into Spanish. "It was perfect for us because it's all a part of what we're trying to do. We want to reach as many people as possible. If we had time to do it in French, we probably would," Stockman laughs. "The Spanish idea just came up because Spanish is the second largest spoken language in the world, and we wanted to reach those people. Hopefully, this is an outlet for us to be able to explore those things."

"It's OK to follow your dreams and put all of your effort into making your dream a success." Stockman says, "Without the people we've had behind us initially - Michael Bivins, Jheryl Bubsy abd a handful of others who nurtured us, taught us, and honestly had our best interest in their hearts - I don't think we'd be the people that we are today." Speaking of Michael Bivins, who is responsible for bringing Boyz II Men to Motown, he hasn't been around their way since their debut album, 'Cooleyhighharmony,' in 1991. "We're still cool; we're still civil friends," says Stockman. "We haven't talked to each other in a long time, honestly. I don't know how he's doing or anything like that, but we're still cool."

Well, over the years, they've worked well with Kenneth "Babyface" edmonds whom they describe as a great songwriter. "He probably has kept some songs for himself (laughter), but Face is still giving us great tunes. He still presents us with great, great music that we instantly get into. It's like a connection we have with Face. It's like the instant bond - chemistry-type thing," Stockman says.

Boyz II Men were supposed to work with The Artist on Evolution, but unfortunetly they couldn't get their schedules together. They are hoping to work with him very soon because after the tour, they're heading back to the studios to record their next album.

Their lessons in love through their songs have given us goose bumps, butterflies in our stomachs, and hopes for the perfect love, but Stockman says their greatest lesson in love has been to remember to please themselves. Sometimes they tend to get caught up in trying to please too many people and leaving themselves wanting.

Now when the question was asked if any of them plan to get married anytime soon, Stockman replies, "You never know," he laughs.

Not only has Boyz II Men made history by having the fastest selling single in 1994 ("I'll Make Love to You"), they've also made history for surpassing world-wide sales for all their albums (over 30 million). Their II album was Motown's first album to debut at #1 since Stevie Wonder's Songs in the Key of Life, in 1976. "Motown has bred probably the greatest artists that's ever recorded," Stockman says. "I think every artist today and in the future has been influenced or will be influenced by Motown acts of the past like Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, and The Temptations, who all pretty much laid the foundation for groups of today. And it's a great feeling. It has always been a great feeling to be a part of such an historical label."
