This stylish musical parody set in Paris' seedy neighborhood in pre 1990's France.

Filled with 20th Century Music lyrics this is an anacronistic movie with charm and tragedy.

Christian (McGregor) is a poet who knows the lyrics to famous 20th century music. He amazes Telouse-Letrec, a short man (Leguizamo in shortened special effect) who is into bohemian playrighting and musicals. Letrec's new musical is called "spectacular, spectacular". So Christian helps Letrec and his band of actors go to the Moulin Rouge nightclub (looks more like a circus on the outside) to meet Satine (Kidman) a beautiful courtesan (a nicer word than prostitute) who wants to be an actress. After mistaking Christian for the Duke (Roxburgh) Satine (after singing "Diamonds are a girls best friend") finds out about Letrec's musical as well as falling in love with Christian in the process in her elephant shaped building. Besides chuckling at the 20th century music lyrics (don't get into a conversation with Christian about love otherwise he will quote The Beatles "All you need is love") Some of the dance numbers are pretty over the top hillarious ("like a virgin") but what comes off as comedy also comes with tragedy, and is one of the best musicals using tragedy as a side genre. The movie is not an operetta (all song and dance). and the best original song in the movie is Christian and Satine's "Come What May" which is very beautiful. The first time it is sung it is shown in a musical daydream performance with the Duke appearing saying "look here is a frog!" or something to that wording and starts poking it with his cane. why did they put that in there. The flashyness of some of the dance numbers is like being on an hallucienogienic drug. The director loves fast cuts, so prepare for a dizzy camera work. one of the coolest special effects is the tour of the seedy neighborhood of Paris with the camera going in and out of the paris skyline. but what comes out of this film is a love for the crazyness that is a musical (people bursting out in song and dance).

An original.

10/10 great use of 20th century music lyrics and interesting lovable characters.100%/100% cool camera work and some acting out of "Yellow Submarine" (Letrec and his buddy's look at each other in different head movements really fast. ) 1
