The True Story of A 73-year old man trying to mend his relationship with his brother is a charming feel good movie.
A Good movie to watch with a Grandmother
This is the story of Alvin Straight (Farnsworth) a 73 year old man who finds out his brother he hasn't seen for 10 years had a stroke. He wants to visit his brother in Wisconsin, only one problem, he's in Iowa. He sight is blurred so he can't drive a car. His next best thing is his riding lawnmower so he tells his daughter Rose (Spacek) that he is going to visit Lyle (Stanton). his own lawnmower doesn't work so he gets a john deere one and drives slowly on his way to Wisconsin, along the way he meets up with a runaway pregnant teen. He mentions what he told his daughter when she was younger. He told her that you can easily break one stick, but if you tie it with other sticks, it's harder to break, Alvin tells the runaway. "That's what I call a family" Alvin through this movie shows off how he cares about people as well as himself. He meets up with a WWII veteran and talk about their experiences in the war. He just seems to be a nice guy. Alothough a bit slow it does have its good moments especially shots of rural farmland and trees. This is the latest directoral work of David Lynch, The creator of Twin Peaks and the strange suburban film "Blue Velvet" He goes a little bit mature than his previous works, and decides to change his style just for this movie. The begining scene has the longest camera shot from the front yard of Alvin's house to one of the windows on the side. This is one of Lynch's specialties. Richard Farnsworth as Alvin makes the man come to life on screen. Sissy Spacek Plays his Daughter who has a speech problem. 10/10 for interesting look at the journey of Straight on his lawnmower and good sayings. and the people he meets. although it is slow in pace it is a beautiful look at rural life. 100%/100% Just good camera work.
