Living in New York City, there is no way to avoid using the subway, unless your aim is never to stray from your own block. One rainy, miserable day, I used the subway to go a mere 17 blocks from 51st to 68th.
Riding to 68th Street
51.
Clankity, clankity. Screech, screech,
Subway car subway car
Strange people, people, people,
Get on, sit down,
Sit down--grumble, grumble
GO!
Jerking, lurching, picking up speed
Picking up speed.
Picking up speed Rock with momentum
With the mo--oh?
Doors open Singing group
Stare and listen stare and--
Announcement, muffled voice,
Muffled voice
Guesswork guesswork
Get off
Stay on, stay on. Wrong stop
59.
Lurching, jerking, SCREECH
halt.
Transfer--strange people go strange people come
Strange people sit by me, sit by me
Glance over, look down
no contact
NO CONTACT!
Underground underground
snake under the city,
Winding
speeding, crawling
Subway car subway car
heat.
68.
