In this day and age, it seems strange to refer to television as "inspirational." It is, when complex stories are told with engaging characters. Even comedy can carry this level of subtle complexity depending on the subject matter.
That said, but I'm going to get into some of my all time favorite television programs, both live-action and animation, and tell you what I find inspiring about them.
Babylon 5, Beauty and the Beast: The Television Series, JEM, Life Goes On, Robotech, Voltron, Defender of the Universe
BABYLON 5 network-maintained show site
A science fiction novel for television with a beginning, middle, and end... that's the premise behind what I find to be one of the most ambitious, thought-provoking series to come to television in recent years. Although the show has had its share of meanders due to the politics of Hollywood, which has affected the story only in small obvious ways, overall it remains well-crafted in every aspect -- from story to graphics to lighting to sets to makeup, and on and on. Series creator J. Michael Straczynski is a hard-working visionary, who in order to bring his vision together wrote over two seasons worth of episodes himself, which is one for the record books, and a feat I find very inspirational.
Babylon 5 struggled for four years in the syndicated market, and it was beginning to look like Mr. Straczynksi would be forced to wrap the story a year early as renewal seemed bleak. But in that 11th hour, Turner Network Television (TNT) agreed to produced the final season of the show, which begins January 1998. They also are airing the rest of the episodes in their original order.
To quote series creator J. Michael Straczynski: "Faith manages." May this kind of faith inspire us all.
