Dark City

A guest review by Cosmic Chris

Ok, I went to a party friday night, and after watching starship troopers, we saw dark city. This is actually one I wanted to see, but was bothered by the way in which this film managed to harbor both elements I enjoy quite a bit, and stuff I wouldn't subject my dog to.

To begin with. Who the fuck filmed this? The heavily edited style/quick flip between scenes nearly kills the goth ambience they were trying for. Admittedly I had had a few at the time, but I was finding this style immensely annoying and not at all what I would have thought the director would have actually wanted.

Beyond this the film actually had a fairly stimulating plot if you could get past the lack of identification with any of the 'characters' (course, your not supposed to identify with them, so hey). Actually, by the point in which we get to the big climax where John gets the shot to his head which tells him how to destroy the baddies, I am was genuinely enjoying the film. The problem then really lies in the last 10 min of the film. This shot was supposed to tell him how to control his powers and about the 'bad guys', but one finds themselves hoping he will bring a better world both to the humans and the 'outsiders' or whatever they are called. Instead, after the injection, he goes toe to toes with 'em shooting psychic ray beams out of his head in what must be one of the most ludicrous scenes in film I've seen for a while. Bleargh. What started as a half interesting plot turns into some psyko powar shodown. *yawn*

The real mystery is how people said the show was so weird or hard to understand. It really wasn't either. Actually it was pretty much an expanded twilight zone episode (special 60's sci fi theme donated by p.k.dick). Again, I am really amazed by the stupidity of american movie goers. Its like people thinking Starship troopers is serious. Maybe no one today has seen outer limits, but if this is the 'weird' side of hollywood, I give up.
