Godzilla: The Series

A guest review by Alfredo F. Batoon, Jr

Well, I have to tip my hat to Richard Rayins, as well as, Emmerich and Devlin for their attempts to save Godzilla (I am calling him that name because he can be cool as the other Godzilla). Actually, I gonna miss Godzilla because the Series will end very soon (2 more episodes remain) despite a sequel coming to theatres in 2001. In fact, this animated series is 100 times better than the movie because of the addition of monster battles and the non stop action. I am proud to give G98/GINO/the Iguana the name Godzilla because he earned it. Let's just call both monsters, Godzilla of the East and Godzilla of the West.

Where should I start. Let's see. The series begins where the movie ended. Dr. Nick Tatopulous and the military go back to Madison Square to search for the last egg and destroy it. Nick stumbles on to the egg. Nick falls into some slime as the egg hatches. A new Godzilla is born and sees Nick. The monster approaches Nick and begins to lick him like he is his master or parent. Anyway, soon after, Godzilla and Nick become close like Asagi was to Gamera. Nick raises and trains Godzilla with the help of associates, Mendel Craven and Elsie Chapman. Also, intoduced is Randall Hernandez, a intern (if could call him that) assists Nick in tight spots, basically hacking his way into the government computers. However, the French Government finds out that a new Godzilla is born and so Agent Monique Dupre is sent by her commanding officer to destroy the monster. She tries many attempts to destroy Godzilla but soon realizes that Godzilla is a friend to mankind, but she still doesn't trust the monster completely. This doesn't go well with her commander, Filippe Roache (the character played by Jean Reno). But, soon gives trust to Godzilla as well for the time being. Also, defending Godzilla is Major Anthony Hicks (but, he soon is ranked up to Colonel in the series) who led the battle against the first Godzilla, but now puts his career on the line for the new Godzilla, telling his troops to lay off Godzilla; unfortunately, some of his troops try to kill him anyway without order.

Furthermore, The HEAT team is created. Continuing the trend of a Daikaiju Task Force/Research Team. HEAT stands for Humanitarian Enviromental Analysis/Attack Team (depends on who says it). HEAT travels the world protecting mankind for other monsters that threaten it. But, when HEAT is in trouble, Godzilla comes to the rescue. Kinda like the Godzilla in the 70's cartoon where Godzilla helps the Calico Team, enought said. Godzilla faces a variety of monsters. I admit that some are creative as (or more) than some of the Toho Daikaiju, even though it is animation.

Even though FOX is ending the series many of the G-Fans enjoyed the series while it lasted. In my opinion, it is because of the animated series that Godzilla will return in 2001 and a new chapter will be written for the Godzilla of the West.

What was Great about the Series:

1. Godzilla retained the power of his atomic breath.

2. The monster battles were cool.

3. The monsters themselves were cool.

4. Explosions and total destruction everywhere.

5. Some of the rival monster weapons.

6. Godzilla showed some intelligence and stategy against many rival monsters and not to mention he kills many of his enemies different ways.

What was annoying about the Series:

1. The characters always bicker at each other every episode.

2. NIEGEL gets destroyed every episode and Mendel screams out his name in shock. Just like where Kyle from "South Park" says "Oh my God! You killed Kenny!"

3. Some crackpot always try to find a way to take control of Godzilla or try to kill him. My most hated Villan in the series was Cameron Winter, he is such dumbf***. That B**** always thinks he is all that. Some should kick his @$$.

4. Randall manages to say something stupid every episode, trying to be funny. He tries too hard.

5. NIGEL's diffent voices. Every episode Randall reprograms a different personality into NIGEL's database and that continues to PO Mendel.

6. Nick's three word quote in every episode: "GO! GO! GO!"

Final Thoughts

Over time Godzilla (Tristar) became love by some, not all G-Fans. Sure, he is not the King of Monster, but he is getting there. Soon, Gojira will have a running buddy in to daikaiju industry. Since, Emmerich and Devlin are not part of the Godzilla productions, now we can probably see a better Tristar Godzilla, one that would probably stand with its Japanese Counterpart. I don't know. Only time will tell.
