I recently acquired the manga adaptation of Godzilla vs Biollante and was surprised by the changes that had been made to the story. I had the manga for Godzilla vs King Ghidorah that featured a few changes, but was mostly a streamlined version of the movie that tossed out most of the characters and subplots. The adaptation of Biollante was equally paired in the plot department, but the parts that remained were radically altered. Gone was the international dealings, most of the grief the professor suffered that would drive him to fuse his daughter's cells with those of Godzilla and a few of the lesser characters. In it's place, the story now was almost totally focused on Miki and her relationship with Godzilla! This was a surprising turn of events, but since I'm running a Miki shrine it worked out pretty well for me.
[Note: The manga is by Toshihiro Hirano, the creator of the Iczer anime and -along with Yasuhiro Moriki- the Iczer manga series. Hirano really managed to but his own unique spin on the adaptation, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It makes me wish more adaptations were this free-wheeling, especially when the results are this amusing.]
The story starts out with a flashback to 1984 where a young Miki is preoccupied with thoughts of Godzilla. Here's a shot of Miki after she had yet another Godzilla-centered nightmare.
Unfortunatly for Miki her premonitions proved to be true and Godzilla returned and attacked Tokyo. During Godzilla's rampage both of Miki's parents were killed, which helps explains Miki's preoccupation with stopping or at least understanding Godzilla.
[Dedicating herself to justice after witnessing the death of her parents; that's right, Miki has the same backstory as Batman.]
Luckily Miki managed to grow up to be pretty normal for a psychic who has a preoccupation with a nuclear powered monster. Hirano took the theme of roses and a female lead and really ran with it. A number of the panels in the manga look like they came out of a romance comic aimed at young girls.
Trust me, the above pic is a scan from a Godzilla story.
Continue on to the next page. You know you're going to have to see this one through to the end! If not, here's the escape hatch.
