Ok, I have just returned from the latest installment of Lethal Weapon. Its called Lethal Weapon 5 "The Patriot". Let me begin by saying it was a fun movie, with all the violence, and goofy sub-plots one may expect from a nearly 3 hour hollywood extravaganza. I totally enjoyed the movie on several different levels, yes I do have levels. From the costumes to the score to even almost the acting.
One thing I really wanted to look for was to see how much modern Political Correctness got into the film, and there was only one small part that made me chuckle. And that is, Mel is a wealthy plantation owner in South Carolina in 1776. However, to be PC he doesn't own his slaves, they are free and work for him, because he is such a swell guy...(uh huh...yeah right that happened all the time back then)
But what I want to talk about in this movie, is how it is sooooo damn similar to the Lethal Weapon series you will want to either laugh or puke. The main character played by Mel Gibson, for the sake of arguement we will call him Martin Riggs, is the hero of this movie.
Similarities:
1) Gibson's wife is dead
2) When Gibson gets angry in this movie, he acts like the revengeful Martin
Riggs, not in actions but in character.
3) When Gibson is being introspective on his life, and praying or just
sitting, I swear you could almost hear the sexy sax from Lethal Weapon in the
background. (Or my mind was so confused that I thought I heard it)
4) He doesn't have Roger as his side kick, but instead they decide to go with
another type of minority, a French Army Officer.
5) The mono y mono battle between Gibson, and the bad guy at the end, not
only complete with Gibson almost losing, but also with the patented Martin
Riggs head butt, that only hurts the person receiving the head butt.
The one thing I was upset they didn't try to copy was Leo Geotz. I mean wouldn't have been fun to have a small italian saying "they fuck you at the blacksmiths".
There were several other similarities, but I have not mentioned them, I suggest we all see the movie and compare notes as to what we all find, make a game out of it. Kind of like the 7 degrees to Kevin Bacon, it can be the 7 degrees to how The Patriot is like Lethal Weapon.
One the one to five scale I would give this movie a 4. I was entertained, the plot, and movie was actually kind of good. And its grade also comes in because with how expensive it is to see a movie, it was almost 3hrs long, so I feel like my cheap ass got its money's worth.
Now lets all discuss the 7 degrees of The Patriot to Lethal Weapon...
Thanks Marcus! It's good to see you gave the movie a four out of... something. If you would like to submit a review drop me a line at gleep9@hotmail.com and I'll gladly look it over. Okay soldier, march on back to either the Second Movie or Main page.
