The Continuing Story of Deep Space 2: Page 4

"Please state the nature of the medical emergency."

Nadine Jumped back three meters. In a fraction of a second her type one phaser was pointed on the head of the new appeared person. As she suddenly realised this almost totally bald person in blue Starfleet uniform was just a holographic image of the Emergency Medical Holographic Program. The Holodoc looked at her in fascination. Nadine put away her weapon. Then she tapped her comebadge.

"Nadine to ops."

"Go ahead, Nadine."

"Sir I am in sickbay. There is someone here you have to meet."

"Did you use the word: someone ?"

"Affermative sir."

"We are on our way. Arthur out."

The Holodoc tried to intervene ...

"Look ensign, could you tell me what your injuries are, because after a quick scan I cannot find anything wrong with you. I suggest you report for duty imediately."

The same moment the Commander followed by Jan entered sickbay. Both of them smiled, but the smile quickly dissappeared. This Holodoc could have an idea what had been going on on the station. When he was asked the status of the station the Holodoc explained some of the mystery of DS2.
Just before the last crew had left the station they did a complete shut down of all systems except for life support and holographic programs. There seemed to be a malfunction in holodeck 2. Power could not be shut down, but the crew did not have time to make the necessary repairs and had to leave. A few days after they had left a huge starship of unknown design approached the station and an entire team of engineers were beamed aboard DS2.

"OK, Doc, how many engineers are we talking about ?"

"Commander ... I am a doctor not a calculator."

About three hundred engineers in unknown but still recognisable Starfleet uniforms came aboard DS2 and worked for almost two months around the clock to make modifications. The holodoc was neglected. With the door of sickbay open the he had been able to watch the engineers and had noticed that altough the equipment they used looked a lot like federation tools, they were a little bit different. The Holodoc could follow the progress by accessing the tactical database. An entire new structure was build in the "skin" of the old station. Heavy armoured walls and bulkheads replaced the old ones. A large arsenal of weaponary was installed. Cargobays four, five, six and seven were loaded with torpedos. In total there were eight thousand six hundred and seventien of those deadly projectiles.

"Engineering, this is the commander. Check on all cargobays for weaponary visually."

"Aye Sir. I will send Jan Roel to check all ten of them. Louis out."

As the Doc continued with his report it was more and more obvious that Starfleet must have send a special group to accomplish this transformation. It still was not clear why this special group did not shutdown the Emergency Medical Holographic Program. They must have deleted files from the main computer memory, but there still was to much present to conceal the operation. Maybe some things were deliberately left to find.
When the works were finnished the engineers were beamed aboard their ship. The name of the ship was unknown and without registration. Jan checked the database for the last ship which visited DS2, on the Doc's terminal. When Arthur looked at him, the XO could only shake his head.

"The last ship which visited DS2 was the Ambassador Class USS Hornblower, NCC-26412. She picked up the last crew."

"We seem to get a little more wiser here. Thanks for the help Doc."

"Jan Roel to Commander Arthur. I have checked all ten cargobays. Cargobays four, five, six and seven are filled with weapons. I don't know how many exactly."

"Thanks Jan Roel, go back to engineering. We need those internal sensors on line."

"Acknowledged."

"Commander this is Louis. We still have some difficulties with the internal sensors. But we have discovered that there is a program still running in holodeck 2."

"Thanks, Louis, we are already on our way."

Jan was the first out of sickbay. The commander himself didn't like sickbay very much either. The door zapped behind them and altough the door was already closed, the Doc had the last word. Maybe just talking to himself...

"Please don't forget to report here again. Every new crewmember on the station must have a physical examination first..."
