BALTIMORE

BAD NEWS FOR BALTIMORE IN 1999.

The city has now revealed a new "West Side Master Plan" which calls for the virtual destruction of the old shopping district. Though this includes restoration of the Hippodrome, it appears to signal the end of the Empire, the New, the remaining facade of Keith's, the New Howard, the Auditorium, Kernan's Hotel, the Stieff Piano building, and dozens of other significant structures representing every era of Baltimore history from the 1830's through the 1990's. These buildings are part of the integrity of the city. Without this mix of structures, Baltimore might as well be any other city. Good crab cakes alone do not comprise our city's identity! I am assuming that if you are visiting this site, you are either interested in movie palaces or Maryland and Virginia history (perhaps all of the above). I urge you to speak against this plan to destroy downtown Baltimore! Please, write to your legislators, write to the Sun, whatever--but please help to make it known that this wholesale destruction is not desirable or productive.
