Thanks for inviting from snopes...
Why do you think the grafonola produced better
sound? I've got a Victrola.
It's still basically a needle attached to a big
cornucopia-shaped thing, right? Is the material for the grafonola's horn a better carrier? Or
the wood housing less resonant?

Great page, Dan. I now know more about old theaters and record players than I EVER wanted to know. Thank you sooooo much! I'll direct my sister, who lives in the Baltimore area, to this site. I'm sure she'll be interested in your fight to keep downtow
intact!
See you on the UL Message Board!

Great site. You state that the Town & the Hippodrome, which closed in 1990, are not mentioned in plans for revitilization of their neighborhood. I urge you - or anyone there - to investigate this. Through shortsightedness, Nashville allowed every single o
e of it movie palaces to be destroy. One dated to 1890. It was The Vendome, which began as a legit house - very ornate, two balconies. The Paramount - mention in several books as a fine example of atmostpheric architecture. The Knickerbocker - a rare exam
le of a theater with marquees and box offices on two streets. The Tennessee - a smaller version of Radio City Music Hall. The Belmont - splendid Spanish structure with a curtain fifty feet high that rose up. The Belle Meade - first rate 1938 example of th
idea of movie palaces moving to the suburbs.
The only thing Nashville has going for it now is that the two largest cinema chains control a city exploding in growth. As a result, two modern versions of the movie palaces have open - the 5,500 seat Hollywood 27 and the samller, more upscale Green Hil
s Common 16. The former is very Las Vegas, the latter more New York.
Baltimore would live to regret not have an old palace, and it seems unthinkable in a city so into historic preservation!

Greetings! Great website. I'm an artist working on a community arts project revolving around General Lew Wallace, author of "Ben-Hur", who was military "ruler" of Baltimore in 1864. He transformed the white aristocratic Maryland Club into a Freedman's
ureau which housed the newly freed former-slave refugees from Maryland Plantations, people who were flooding into Baltimore in 1864.
Wallace stayed at Eutaw House which one reference suggests was located on the same site as the Hippodrome!!!! Do you know anything about this?
Please write at pwalsh@sprynet.com
Also check out the LINK website at www.baltolink.org
While there, go to "other Arts sites" and check out the Cultural Cryptanalysts Collective website.
You will be very interested.
Thanks,
