Angels are all around, watching and helping us throughout the day. Seth (Nicolas Cage) and Cassiel (Andre Baugher) are two such angels. They get together and compare notes about us and gather to listen to the sunrise. One day while making his rounds at a hospital, Seth sees Dr. Maggie Rice (Meg Ryan) and thinks she sees him. No mortal is supposed to see angels unless they want them to, so this incident gets Seth wondering about Dr. Rice. It is through following Maggie that Seth meets Nathan Messinger (Dennis Franz), who turns out to be a fallen angel. Nathan gave up his immortality for a woman. Soon Seth finds himself pondering if Maggie is worth giving up his eternal life for.
City of Angels is a remake of a 1987 German film Himmel iiber Berlin, released in the US as Wings of Desire. While City of Angels is not exactly my kind of movie I did get some enjoyment out of it. Cage and Ryan were both impressive and worked well together. I found the ubiquitous angels the most interesting, which helped since the first half was slow. Franz also did well and provided some much needed comedy. City of Angels is a well writen and acted but it's just not what I want in a movie.
