During his Oscar acceptance speach, for playing a gay soldier, Cameron Drake (Matt Dillon) thanks his High School English teacher, Howard Brackett (Kevin Kline). He also tells the world that Mr. Brackett is gay. This is news to Howard, his fiancee Emily (Joan Cusack), his parents, and the whole town. Howard tries to put everyone at ease by assuring them that he is not gay. But everybody isn't quite so sure, from his students to the principal, who threatens to fire Howard if he is gay. Soon the media shows up wanting to know Howard's story. One repoter, Peter Malloy (Tom Selleck) who is openly gay, is convinced that Howard is in denial about his gayness. Even though he has had some doubts, Howard still asserts that he is heterosexual and his wedding should proceed as planned.
This is a very funny movie, the scene when Howard listens to tapes in attempt to become more macho is a prime example. Another is when the old women at the wedding sit around and tell their secrets. Kline was great as the effeminate Howard, as was Cusack as his fiancee. Both had a lot of humorous lines. At times In & Out is too cute, like the final scene at the High School which was also too long. For the most part, In & Out is an exceedingly amusing flick.
