Starship Troopers: 5 BEERS

Rated: R,   129 minutes.

It's the future and young Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien) does not know what to do with his life. Since his best friend and girlfriend sign up for military duty so does he. After joining Johnny discovers he won't be stationed with Carl (Neil Patrick Harris) and Carmen (Denise Richards) and starts to rethink his decision about being in the war against the bugs. The bugs are just as they sound, a bunch of bugs that have declared war on Earth. After a boring setup and the obligatory boot camp is hell scenes the movie starts moving. When we finally get to the bug war the movie is exciting. The battle scenes are grisly and fast paced. The bugs were well done although their planet is a boring dirt ball. The movie is interupted at several points by news updates. These updates were clever and provided most of the humor. None of the actors gave a preformance worth noting except maybe Harris, it was too funny seeing Dougie Howser dressed up like a Nazi. If there was more carnage and less setup this would have been a great action movie. As it is Starship Troopers comes in slightly better than average.
