Xena: Warrior Princess is a spin-off from Sam Raimi's
Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. Starring Lucy Lawless
as Xena and Renee O'Connor as her companion and friend Gabrielle,
Xena has fast outgrown Hercules in popularity and
is currently the number one syndicated T.V. program in the U.S.
The show combines mythology with martial arts action, spectacular New Zealand scenery
and big-screen special effects. But its more than just another action-packed adventure.
Xena uses the "Golden Ages" as an alternate stage for contemporary storytelling.
With components such as noticeable sexual friction between Xena and Gabrielle, a passionate interracial relationship, and Xena's morally-indefensible past as a brutal warlord, Xena: Warrior Princess has bold storylines that keep people tuning in and
watching every week.
Set in ancient Greece, the plot follows Xena as she wanders the "ancient world". Once a
brutal warlord bent on destruction, Xena has turned into a noble heroine, determined to
make amends for the sins of her past by helping people free themselves from tyranny and
injustice. In her quest for atonement, Xena is joined by the feisty and fast-talking
Gabrielle. Together, they face greedy tyrants, slave traders, barbaric tribes, giants, the
mythological Gods, demons, monsters, and a host of other evils.
Xena's amazing skills in the arts of combat and warfare are constantly put to the test as
she travels across the land. To defeat her foes, she relies on strategy, agility, acrobatics,
martial arts, and a variety of weapons including her chakram, a razor sharp discus-like
weapon which she hurls at her enemies with astonishing speed. In her arsenal is also the
"Xena touch," a two-fingered pinch on the pressure points of the neck, which she uses to
extract information from otherwise uncooperative sources. Smart, fearless, and heroic, she
always tries to solve things peacefully; but once committed to a course of action, she is
unrelenting.
Ever since her first appearance on an episode of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Xena
has proven she can hold her own against man and Gods alike. Whether in hand-to-hand
combat or a spirited verbal battle, the Warrior Princess is a formidable foe. But she's more
than just a wisecracking one-woman army: Lucy Lawless brings a touching vulnerability to
the seemingly invincible Xena. She's a woman who has made mistakes -- and wants to
make good. She's a mythical hero who can kick anyone's butt and still find time to work
on friendship issues with her companion, Gabrielle.
The writers of Xena: Warrior Princess have shown little regard for historical
accuracy in creating the show. Xena, for instance, is a warrior from ancient Greece who
defeats medieval foes with fancy kung fu fighting methods, yelps her battle cry in an
Arabic tongue, and speaks with an American accent. Yet this bizarre myriad of cultures,
along with intriguing storylines combine in a unique way to create multiple reasons why
this syndicated T.V. show is such a phenomenon and has gathered a varied following.
