Behind the scenes with the tournament’s Teen Ambassadors

June 4, 1999

Hi! Mary-Kate and Ashley here - Teen Ambassadors of the coolest event this summer - the Women’s World Cup soccer tournament. We are so excited to be reporting to you about the tournament from our view, one that relates to you and your friends! This is the first of our reports that will come to you every month and all the way through the end of the tournament.

Ok... where should we start? Probably with March 29 at the Rose Bowl where we had a chance to train with Mia Hamm and the rest of the World Cup team. We were kind of nervous to meet the team and then to actually do their training drills! Plus, ABC was there filming stuff for TGIF, and so was Entertainment Tonight... talk about pressure! But, everybody was really nice and it was really fun.

Now we are in Toronto filming our upcoming movie, "Switching Goals" which is going to be on ABC’s The Wonderful World of Disney next season. Training with the World Cup team was great because the movie is about soccer! Anyway, while we’ve been busy producing and acting in our movie in Toronto, the Women’s World Cup made some huge announcements.

On April 19th the Women’s World Cup had an event where they introduced the official song, revealed the new tournament trophy, and announced that single tickets were on sale. This was kind of a big deal because up until now people had to buy tickets to all of the games in each city if they wanted to go - but now they can buy for whatever game they want.

The trophy was pretty neat too. It seems kind of weird to get all worked up over a new trophy, but the World Cup is the most popular sporting event in the world, and the trophy is a huge part of it! This is the first time they have a special trophy for the Women’s World Cup which shows they’re finally "getting it" ... it’s all about girls doing their thing!!!

The coolest part was the official song. The song is called "Because We Want To" and it was performed at the event by Billie who is about to make it huge in the U.S.! She’s from England and her album is already double platinum (it’s sold over 2 million copies). The song is really high energy and fun. Trust us on this one... Billie is going to be HUGE!

Billie is going to perform June 19th at Giants Stadium for the Opening Ceremonies and July 10th at the Rose Bowl for the Closing Ceremonies. We’ll be in Paris on June 19th, but we’ll be there on July 10th and we want to see you there! So... get your tickets! Well... we better get back to our movie.

Mary-Kate and Ashley signing off... more from us next month!!!

June 1999

Hi! It’s Mary-Kate and Ashley, Teen Ambassadors to the Women’s World Cup, back to talk about the biggest sporting event there’s ever been for women in the world, which happens to be less than a week away!

With June 19th right around the corner, the World Cup fever is definitely taking over! The USA just played Canada in their last game before the start of the World Cup in front of the largest crowd they’ve ever had (besides the Olympics!). The game was in Portland on Sunday, June 6, and 23,325 fans came to watch team USA win 4-2. Canada is one of the 16 teams that will play in the World Cup and they gave the U.S. a scare on Sunday by scoring the first goal of the match just seven minutes into the game!

Canada’s lead didn’t last long, though, because four minutes after that Mia Hamm scored her 109th career goal. If that seems like a lot of goals, you are absolutely right! In fact, Mia holds the world record for the most goals ever scored by a guy or girl. Six minutes after Mia scored, Tiffeny Milbrett scored and the U.S. was winning 2-1. The score remained 2-1 until one minute before halftime when Canada scored again, tying the game at 2-2. But... less than a minute after that Kristine Lilly scored for the U.S. and they ended the first half leading 3-2. It was the most exciting half of soccer we’ve ever seen!

The team got to go on vacation (well... not really on vacation... but they didn’t have to go to practice) until June 14th, and then they met up again in New Jersey to get ready for the first game of the tournament. This brings us to our next update and where the fun really starts!

The Women’s World Cup just announced that `N Sync is going to sing on June 19th at Giants Stadium during the Opening Ceremonies. We know that all of the girls (us included!) love Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance, and the fact that they are actually going to be at the game performing is unreal! For all of the guys out there (not to worry!) because the Women’s World Cup also announced that Billie and B*Witched will be there to perform too! June 19th is going to be so cool!

The biggest bummer is that we are going to be in Paris filming a movie on June 19th and will have to miss the party! Well... we have to admit... filming a movie in Paris isn’t all that bad! But, we’re excited for all 77,000 of you who will be there to see it. You’re lucky... we’re jealous!

Let’s see... what else from the World Cup front... Did we mention that over 400,000 tickets have already been sold? That all of the games are going to be on television? That the U.S. team is one of the best in the world and could win the whole thing?

Anyway... we’re off to Paris but will be watching the whole thing. And...we’ll be back in the states to go to the final in Los Angeles. We’ll see you soon....
