Proud to be a Chicagoan!

The late, great, Mayor Richard J. Daley always had the right thing to say at just the right time. In 1968 the Democratic National Convention met in Chicago to elect their candidate for President to run against Republican candidate Richard Nixon.

Protests by hippies, yippies and others against the Democratic Party's escalation of the war in Viet Nam, and against the Establishment in general, were organized to coincide with the event. The Chicago Police were mobilized to restore order when the protests seemed, to Mayor Daley, to get out of hand. What ensued was a bloodbath of beatings and arrests. And, of course, let's not forget the Chicago Seven. (Tom Hayden is still in politics here in California.)

The following audio clip was Daley's response to the media when it was reported that maybe he "over-reacted".
