THE WEDDING SINGER Hilarious. The film is very much a typical and predictable love story but it’s so nicely done it leaves you going aawww when it ends. Set in the eighties when Bananarama’s THE Spicegals, the movie speaks of a couple who finds true love in one another instead of their fiance(e)s. What’s new about the show is its corny-yet-contagious humour and the endearing lovers. Drew Barrymore’s sugar-saccharine sweetness and Adam Sandler’s sexy-sensitivity are so compatible you wanna rip their heads off in pure envy. Coupled with a rapping-granny and a drag-singer, this mood-lifter should prove enjoyable even to those single.
MERCURY RISING Opening well, the film did not bore but neither did it engage. Everything seems half-cooked : promising scenarios leading to conventional sequences. While successfully establishing interest in the typical context of a white cop with a black cop friend fighting against government conspiracy, the movie brings you down to yet another second-rate action film. The film lacks the depth and complexity which have been taken for granted in many films today.
This film is so cool you can’t wait for the future to arrive. Fret not if thou worry that Matt Le Blanc behaves like Joey. Not only does he bring colour and humour to this sci-fi-action pic, Matt steals the limelight from veteran leads William Hurt and Gary Oldman. Complimenting Blonde Babe Heather Graham as her love interest, Matt delivers his role as an outstanding and intelligent Major air force pilot pretty convincingly.
With gimmicks more high-tech than those in 007, futuristic settings cooler than Star Trek’s and interior deco more impressive than that in Gattacca, this 90s adaption of the TV series starts well and sustains it’s energy and creativity throughout. Look out also for the young kid who’ll make all children proud with his wit and the surprising stunts he pulls off.
Consider a ticket of its sequel sold!
CITY OF ANGELS Meg Ryan stars as yet another hopeless romantic deeply in love with an immortal played charmingly by dopey-eyed Cage. This love story deals with more than the romance of its star-crossed lovers. The quasi-documentary makes us appreciated what we have, seemingly fore warning us about decisions we make in life. The message? Treasure what you have for life’s too short for any regrets... I think.
GODZILLA Better known as 'Gojilla' in this western remake of the Japanese hero (supposedly the hybrid of a whale and a gorilla! Beats me too), this action flick shadowing Jurassic Park and ID4 may not impress many but it sure entertains. Witnessing a destructive mutant stomping through one of the most dangerous cities in the world is pure fun. Despite its much predictable twists and ending, the cast complimented the computer-generated lead well and saves the show from total embarrassment. Not a bad way to spend 2 hours on a Saturday night.
DEEP IMPACT Another beautifully crafted script blending the wonders of super-effects and the wealth of human emotions. An alien in the form of 2 asteroids if you may, crashing into earth at the rate of sound and threatening total annihilation of mankind. This teary film like many other event flicks celebrates the triumph of Man over Nature realistically, excitingly and emotionally. Elijah Wood (star of The War, Forever Young and The Goodson) adds to his impressive list of credits another outstanding performance while Tea Leoni proves that pretty female leads can come without male love interests. A must watch, especially during this season of quality-movie drought.
