LETHAL WEAPON 4
This action-comedy is more comedy than action. Joe Pesci is funny to the core,
so's Mel and partner Danny Glover, not forgetting the hottest comedian of the season-
Chris Rock. This 4th installment is not disappointing but do not expect anything spectacular
though. Recommended definitely to fans of the series and those in need of good ol' fashion laughter.
ARMAGEDDON For a 2 1/2 hour event movie of the year, I expected more. It no doubt scored in the eye-boggling effects and heart-pacing action departments but in terms of emotional depth, it loses out to Deep Impact.
The build up is impressive but the core of the script lacks originality and surprises. An all too audience-pleasing ending penalises it realism. Unlike the Comet, the focus is placed mainly on its leads and the touching scenes are centred around them,
making the film more about them than about Mankind.
Nevertheless, the show's a fine experience (especially the part when Paris gets wiped-out) filled with moments of humour, sadness and triumphant.
Thanks to beautiful Liv Tyler, this movie is recommended.
KNOCK OFF A bunch of nim-witted terrorists controls Hong Kong during its handing-over using their newly invented explosives (the size of coins) by planting them into denim jeans buttons. Jean Claude Van Damme teases us with another one of his comedies directed by Hong Kong veteran Tsui Hark. With such a corny script, even Tsui's trademark action sequences fail to redeem the show.
Alongside grotesquely fake special effects, this movie can't even settle as a lousy comedy. Mr Muscles from Brussels... What happened to our Timecop?
THE AVENGERS UUUma... This big-screen remake of the 60s English hit series is bittingly funny and unbearably witty. The sexual chemistry between the 2 secret agents played by Ralph Fiennes (The English Patient) and Uma Thurman (Poison Ivy) sizzles throughout their mission to defeat the weather-hijacker, played charmingly by Mr James Bond himself, Sean Connery.
Watch out for fascinating high-tech sets and costumes on Uma that fits like skin on flesh. She scores big again as a leggy agent-cum-meteorologist-cum-martial artist with the brawn and the brains. If you're an Uma worshipper or a surrealist (or wants to know what the latter means), wait no more. The Avenger's one of a kind, encompassing romantic comedy's sexual chemistry, Jane Austen's clever repartee, sci-fi pic's special effects and its own blend of action and brew of originality.
HOPE FLOATS This beautiful film about a mother coping with her spouse's adultery is more of a drama piece than a romantic comedy, directed by Forest Whitaker (the Shrimp guy in Forrest Gump). Sandra Bullock gives a touching performance playing Birdee (a former bitchy prom queen that married the then popular football player)
who now returns from Chicago to Montana at her mother's to start life afresh. This no-action-film tinged with humour is only for those who enjoy family drama (or Sandra Bullock). A very rural and simple movie with its own sense of attitude towards life.
THE PATRIOT This typically Segal movie has him playing the only hero again. An outbreak in a town caused by a bunch of terrorists with a twisted sense of patriotism met trouble as their vaccine turned worthless when the viral agent they invented mutated (Doesn't that sound familiar?). How now Brown Cow?
A native American (whose race is coincidentally immune to the virus) with a beautiful daughter, a sexy niece and a PHD in medicine found flower petals that could cure the infection when boiled with water. With hours left to spare before the town dies, the soldiers heads for the fields in full force to pluck the wonder-flowers. Their form of mass distribution : scattering the petals like confetti all over the town with a heli
and annoucing over a loud speaker, instructing the sickly victims to crawl out of their homes to collect these petals one by one (which by then have settled in drains, on roofs, in trees...), boil and drink them. Catch the movie now at a cinema near you.
