THE PERFECT STORM

A lot of heart and thought have definitely been put in by Wolfgang Peterson (Air Force One and Outbreak). This alone separates the blockbuster from typical summer event movies. Needless to say, the waves at sea are as breathtaking as the hurricanes and cyclones in Twister. Clooney, who originally wanted Wahlberg's role, was perfect as the captain who calls the sea his home. Although almost entirely fabricated in terms of the storyline out at sea, this film stays close to the spirit of the fishing town and real characters. Get past the 'hollywood' heroics and you'll probably enjoy it as much as I have.

THE VIRGIN SUICIDES

Kirsten Dunst (the girl who sucked blood in Interview With A Vampire) is one of the five foxy virgins who ultimately... well, you know the movie title. An indie-feel picture which feels real and untheatrical. Cryptic at times and gets uncomfortably haunting almost throughout, touched with light comedic moments here and there. Think Exorcist without the supernatural and a whole lot more closer to home. A downer for a date and probably better appreciated alone.

SHANGHAI NOON

Very typically Jackie. If you enjoyed Who Am I, you should find this East meets West action comedy as delightful. Enough action and stuns with a fair share of humour. Nothing expected or spectacular.

ROMEO MUST DIE

Rap world meets martial arts... just something weird about the chemistry not just between the leads but with the entire film. Story line is mediocre and the action is lacking.

THE PATRIOT

Although not as brilliant as Braveheart, this all American story is uplifting and inspiring except for some tragic moments. Mel does it yet again with an awesome film full of great cinematography, high points, a booming soundtrack and a great cast. Heath Ledger is as charming as his reel father, following the footsteps of his aussie veteran. Should definitely not miss this this summer, especially amidst all the other modern releases, Patriot is stunning standing alone.

U-571

Crimson Tide... as good. U-571 is full of action and thrills, suspense and heartstops. Fantastic testosterone material for all guys age 5 and above. And of course, this American is highly patriotic.
