NEW BOX OFFICE NO.1
Opening weekend grossing US$ 30 million over, Steven Speilberg's war film starring Tom Hanks and Matt Damon out-do Zorro, Lethal Weapon 4 and Armageddon to top the box-office chart this week. Armageddon smelling US$150 million after a month faces great inertia from huge releases ever since its opening. Its unlikely that the shadow of Deep Impact costing US$120 million will live up to its speculated gross of over US$200 million. Meanwhile, The Ship Of Dreams seems reluctant to leave the chart, less than US$7 million shy of US$600 million gross
in North America alone.
BATMAN 5 Madonna... Mel Gibson... Seems no star in Hollywood is left unassociated with the Batman Series.
Latest update is that Kurt Russell's in the running for a taste of bat-shaped spandex. Due next year, the fifth
installment belongs to the director of the 1st 2, Tim Burton (before Joel Schumacher transformed the dark and mysterious hero
into a corny butt-kicker). Batman will have to face Scarecrow and Ms Harley Quinn this time round.
SUPERMAN 6 This on and off project faces budget issues but is scheduled to begin shooting soon. Tim Burton teams up with Con-Air star
Nic Cage to resurrect our favorite action hero. Sandra Bullock as Lois? I hope not.
BRAD PITT'S BACK WITH MEET JOE BLACK Brad Pitt is back as Death who decides to try life on earth in this romantic comedy.
Project's on the verge of ending before the release later this year.
MARIAH AND WHITNEY DUET'S A SUCCESS First, Mariah & Boyz to Men collaborated to land a record-standing 16 weeks at No.1 in the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart. Divas Barbra Streisand & Celine Titanic Dion tried a Tell Him but got dissed. Divettes Brandy & Monica's The Boy Is Mine peaks for 13 consecutive weeks to date but is set to be dethroned when Aerosmith's I Don't Want To Miss A Thing hits stores. Before the end of the year, it'll be Mariah & Whitney's turn. To everyone's surprise, including Babyface himself, the 2 Divas hit it off pretty well during their recording earlier this month. According to Babyface, they seemed in awe of each other and were giggling like school girls from time to time. 2 of pop's greatest voices were chosen because of their interests in gospel music. Dreamwork's The Prince Of Egypt tells the story of Moses.
The soundtrack is scheduled to be released in November and the film opens in US 5 days before Christmas.
ALIEN REJUVENATION Sigourney Weaver does a G.I. Jane again for the 5th installment of Ridley Scott's Alien Series. Winona Ryder, steady of Matt Damon (Saving Private Ryan)
is set to co-star for the second time.
LUKE PERRY'S IN & JASON PRIESTLEY'S OUT LA's hottest zip code 90210 is experiencing a minor cast shuffle. Former teen sensation Luke Perry who played
Brenda's 1st love is set to be back the next season as Jason Priestley's leaving the show. The latter wanted an image change badly
and is rumoured to cross-over to the cousin-series Melrose Place. With the success of his last indie-film Life and Death In Long Island, Jason may well
survive in the movie industry longer than Luke.
THE AVENGERS' NOT VERY WELL RECEIVED The campy film remake is suffering a backlash from critics and audiences alike.
It grossed little over US$10 million in its opening week (a respectable no. for a big-budgeted pic being at least US$20 million),
ranked 3rd with Saving Private Ryan still reigning after a month. Looks like Uma's not everyone's cup of tea.
I STILL KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER... Jennifer Love Hewitt (Party of Five) is back with the sequel to Scream's cousin horror flick.
Her new best friend? The Boy Is Mine's Brandy. They have a vacation a year later and guess who came along...
The movie hits screens in the US in November.
CHARLIE'S ANGELS HIT BIG SCREEN So far... The 3 lucky gals taking on the hit roles from the 70s series are Jenny McCarthy (Singled out),
Michelle Yeoh (Tomorrow Never Dies) and Rupaul (Kidding). The 3rd angel has passed the paths of Jada Pinkett Smith (Scream 2)
and former Spice senastion Geri Halliwell to land on Drew Barrymore's (Scream).
SCREAM 3 The final installment to the horror cult series will still star Neve Campbell, our favourite Scream Queen
alongside Christie Clark. The production is still on hold but is scheduled to be out late 1999. Arrrhhhh!
OSCARS 99 This coveted event will be telecast live on a Sunday evening on
March 21th as opposed to its usual Monday night slot. Look out for Saving Pte Ryan staking its bets then.
JURASSIC PARK 3 Steven Speilberg returns with the 3rd installment to this billiob-dollar franchise as a producer only this time
round. Screenplay will still be penned by Michael Crichton and the release date is tentatively set at the next summer.
Let's hope it's not Godzilla Resurrection.
TITANIC MOVIE 2 True or false, you decide. There is a rumour floating that a ghostly Jack Dawson (Leo's classic role) will
meet nurse Rose in the battlefields of a deserted island during World War 2. Something like Ghost meets In Love and War?
BABE: PIG IN THE CITY Babe goes to the city as a money-spinning franchise in order to save the financially-crippled farm.
Sure beats a dozen porkchops.
1999'S GODZILLA & ARMAGEDDON Next memorial day, 300599, has been booked by Star Wars Prequel starring Ewan McGregor (Nightwatch) and Natalie Portman (The Professional).
Will Smith's lucky day, 040799, will see him hitting the screens in The Wild, Wild West. ID4 and MIB for 1996 and 1997, now a WWW for 99?
He sure is on a long overdue roll these days.
90210'S RIVAL This fall, latest hot teen drama series Dawson's Creek will rival original teen favourite Beverly Hills 90210
by sharing the 8-9 time slot. Dawson's cast will lure viewers with many 'deflowering episodes' while the zip code will relaunch Luke Perry
into the series along with Melrose Place's Laura Leighton. Who will survive? Definitely not Jason Priestley and Tiffany Amber Thiessen's characters in 90218 as
they exit after the 8th season.
THERE"S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY Probably the 1st box office smash she can call her own, Cameron Diaz should be glad her summer flick
is finally no.2 after weeks of release, grossing over $130 million to date, making it the 3rd highest grossing film this summer.
Mary is doing so well it is out-doing Ryan despite being released 2 weeks earlier than the latter.
BACK TO TITANIC The album has been released for a mere 2 weeks and it back in full force.
It is currently the 2nd best selling album on the Billboard 200 chart.
The album includes the orchestral pieces heard on the deck, a Titanic suite
and My heart Will Go On with inserted dialogue from the movie.
