Die
Hard helmer John McTiernan directed this, Arnold Swarzenegger's
greatest folly.
A
magic ticket transports a young movie-fan (Austin O'Brien) into the
film itself, where he teams up with his on-screen hero Jack Slater (Swarzenegger)
to stop the bad guys (who obviously live in the big white house and
blow up the hero's remaining relatives with alarming regularity). When
they lose the ticket and the baddies cross the barrier into the real-world
the real adventure begins.
A
smug plot and unsympathetic characters sink this potentially blockbusting
film. The irony present still doesn't ring true even post-Scream, but
Lethal Weapon/The Long Kiss Goodnight screenwriter Shane
Black's observations and spoofery sometimes hits home (a highlight being
Ahnuld's Hamlet impression). Not all is rotten in Denmark, however -
Bridgette has a decent little role as Whitney Meredith, Jack Slater's
on-screen daughter, and a definite chip off the Austrian block.
