With driving acoustic guitars, catchy melodies, and honest, transparent
lyrics, beggar's
table is already carving out a niche for themselves in the Midwest. The
band meshesdance and rock grooves with acoustic instruments to form an energetic
blend of folk and
alternative rock. Slow and fast songs alike mix pop sensibilities with
musical creativity.
By utilizing their harmonica and fiddle players, using various percussion
instruments, and
experimenting with alternate tunings on the guitars, beggar's table is
able to give theirsongs an "earthy" feel that is both comfortable and intense.
Each member of beggar's table wears several hats. Aside from singing
backing vocalsand playing a standard trap set, Ian uses a variety of auxiliary
percussion instruments
ranging from a rain stick to a plastic cup. Todd plays bass guitar,
acoustic guitar and
harmonica, and sings lead and backing vocals. Kristine sings both lead
and backing
vocals, plays the keyboard and fiddle, and sometimes fills in on bass or
percussion when
needed. Finally, Brice handles the majority of the lead vocals and plays
acoustic, electric,and bass guitars.
The vision of beggar's table is threefold, involving evangelism,
fellowship, and musical
integrity. The first part of the vision of beggar's table can be found in
their name. D.T.
Niles once said, "Evangelism is one beggar telling another beggar where to
find food." It
is the goal of each member of beggar's table to share their food, or their
"table", with the
world around them. Second, they hope to be a means for which the family ofChrist
comes together and praises God. Third, beggar's table endeavors to create
music which is
mature, unique, and enjoyable. In all efforts, they seek to serve God and
obey His will, wherever that may lead.
Beggar's table found its beginnings within the friendship of Brice Pufahl
and Todd Way.
Brice played guitar for the worship team of the Baptist Student Union at
Kansas State
University and had long desired to form some type of musical ministry.
Todd played bass
for the same worship team and as their friendship grew, the vision came to
encompass
both of them. It wasn't until their fourth year at K-State, however, that
God opened thedoors to form beggar's table.
Brice had the opportunity to play with the Campus Crusade for Christ
worship team
several times during his Junior year, and it was there that he met Ian
Murphy. Ian played
drums for the team. The next year, when asked to help form beggar's
table, Ian accepted
wholeheartedly. The three practiced together and had a gig after only one
month. Shortly after their first performance, Brice and Todd met Kristine
Brasuell. They were
impressed with her vocal and keyboard abilities, and asked her to come sit
in on apractice. After one practice, the whole band agreed that she would be a
tremendousasset. So, Kristine was asked to join the group, forming what is known
today as beggar'stable.
