The following mini-interview was taken from the May 5th issue of Soap Opera Weekly......
CHASING EMMY
Outstanding Supporting Actor Nominee Steve Burton
-Did you expect to be nominated this year?
Steve: Absolutely not. It was such a surprise. This nomination means more to me than anything so far in my career.
-With which actor in your category are you most familiar?
Steve: I know all of them are good actors. I've seen a lot of Michael E. Knight's (Tad, AMC) work, and I think he's great.
-Which of your co-stars do you credit with helping you get your nomination?
Steve: Maurice Benard (Sonny) of course, along with Anthony Geary, Kimberly McCullough, Sarah Brown (Luke, Robin, Carly) and all of the Quartermaines.
-If not you, who do you think might win in your category?
Steve: Ian Buchanan (James, B&B) or Michael E. Knight.
-Whom would you like to see win in other categories?
Steve: I'd like for all of the actors from our show [to win], especially Sarah Brown, because I've never seen an actress work so hard.
-Whom would you choose for a lifetime achievement award?
Steve: I think that it would be nice to remember David Lewis (ex-Edward) for all of his work.
-Whom might you forget to thank if you win the Emmy?
Steve: Probably everybody!
-Whom would you like to be the presenter of your category?
Steve: Elvis.
-Why was last year's work such a standout?
Steve: I feel like this is the first year I've had the material for the entire year. It's just been great writing, great story and a great ensemble cast.
-How do you plan to celebrate if you win?
Steve: I'm going to Mexico, win or lose. No matter what, I am leaving the next morning for my vacation.
Where will you keep the Emmy if you win?
Steve: I'll sleep with it the first couple of days, then I'll set it up on the fireplace.
The following article was taken from the May 12th issue of Soap Opera Update. It's a review of the actors in the Best Supporting Actor category and what they do and don't have going for them in regards to the award.
STEVE BURTON
In his favor- Burton's growth as an actor has been inspiring, and his talent is equal to any of the greats in daytime. Scenes that should win Burton his first Emmy: Robin breaking up with Jason on their infamous bridge, and when Sonny left town asking him to take care of Brenda. Insuring him the Emmy is the moment when Jason tenderly informed Sonny that he has sincerely changed his life.
Against him-Burton deserves to be in the Lead Actor category and panelists may hold his youth against him....but how unfortunate if they did.
Other nominees......
SCOTT REEVES
In his favor-As one of daytime's most underrated actors, it is nice to see Reeves recognized for his impressive work for the second year in a row. Reeves had a dynamite year, especially the scenes in which Nina tried to kill herself. Also, the young actor can balance those dramatic scenes with the sweet romance Ryan shared with Tricia.
Against him-His name is Steve Burton.
MICHAEL E. KNIGHT
In his favor- From Tad losing Gloria to Tad dressing up in drag to help Dimitri - Michael E. Knight was the quintessential supporting actor this year.
Against him-His name is Steve Burton. Also, since Knight specializes in comedy, panelists may not take the time two-time Emmy winner as seriously as they should. Besides, didn't we already say that Knight has 2 Emmys!
IAN BUCHANAN
In his favor-Buchanan could continue the Jerry ver Dorn (Ross, GL) pattern: not win for a few years and then win twice in a row. Buchanan was consistent as ever this year as James battled Sheila for Margaret.
Against him-His name is Steve Burton.
GRANT ALEKSANDER
In his favor-It's surprising that this is Aleksander's first nomination. Phillip's romance with Harley allowed us to see the character's rare nurturing and humorous side.
Against him-His name is Steve Burton.
And the winner is...
Who deserves to win: Steve Burton!
Who will win: Steve Burton!
