Burton Exits 'GH' To Go to the Movies
Friday, March 09, 2001
By CAROLYN HINSEY - From the New York Daily News
"General Hospital" will lose two of its most popular actors this
spring: Sarah Brown (Carly) and Steve Burton (Jason).
Representatives from "GH" have no comment on Brown leaving, but producers are accommodating Burton's exit to film a DreamWorks movie called "The Castle," starring Robert Redford and "The Sopranos'" James Gandolfini.
"I was at DreamWorks having a meeting," explains Burton, who had a one-year development deal with DreamWorks Television in place when he returned to "GH" in January.
"We were discussing the pending strike, shows coming up, blah blah blah, and they said, 'There is this movie you should audition for.' It was a small part, but that's what I've always told my manager: 'Get me something small in a big movie.'"
Burton read for the small part, and then was called back while he was driving home to read for a bigger part.
"They handed me 12 pages of material," he continues. "I had it memorized in 15 minutes."
After 11 years of memorizing 40 pages of dialogue a day for "GH," 12 pages was nothing. "If anything, I'm overprepared," says Burton.
Indeed, Burton nabbed the bigger part.
"I play Lt. Peretz, who is the right-hand man of a prison warden
played by James Gandolfini," he explains. "It's directed by Rod Lurie ['The Contender']."
In less than two weeks, Burton and his wife, Sheree, have to wrap up their lives in L.A. and move to Nashville for four months. "We've got dogs," he says. "We have to get someone to watch the house."
And because the movie came up so suddenly, Burton has some work to do at "GH," too — today he will pretape 28 scenes to air through April 23.
"There's a pool going around on whether I can do it or not," he says, laughing. "I wanted to say, 'Let me bet!,' but if I bet against myself, I'll never get out."
Burton insists he isn't sure how "GH" will write out his character, Jason, who has worked for the mob since whacking his head in a car accident and turning his back on his family.
"What are they going to do," Burton cracks, in character. "Hit me on the head with a bottle of Champagne so I can get my memory back?"
