When Soap Net announced plans for it's prime time GH spin-off, Night Shift, the general consensus was that Kimberly McCullough and Jason Thompson would be the show's headliners. So, when Steve Burton's name topped the list it came as a bit of surprise, even to the actor.
"I love Night Shift" exclaims Burton. "I didn't think I'd ever say that but it's true. The first episode was awesome. We did a lot of outside stuff, location stuff. I'm looking forward to seeing it."
Burton says changes in the soap world led him to accept the Night Shift assignment. "Every budget I know of is getting cut every year," he points out. "I thought this might be a sign of what's to come in the future with soaps. They could be on Soap Net. There is a transition happening, and I thought it was a good idea to do something new and original. And with Bob Guza and Jill Phelps involved, it was a no-brainer for me."
Burton also notes that since episodes are self-contained, some stories will be wrapped up quickly. "I like that a lot because you're not playing the same story for three or four months in a row," he says. "And I'm working with Billy Dee Williams. Me, Spinelli and Billy Dee Williams. I never thought that would happen." (laughs)
Working with old friends is another plus. "I've gotten to work with Kimberly more," he adds. "Viewers will see me working with people they wouldn't see me working with on GH. With Robin, for instance, there's a rich history between the characters and they are exploring that on Night Shift. They're spending a lot of time together at the hospital now, so it's pretty cool."
