"SALLY ROSS" (Sonja Smits) Sally Ross is the daughter of the late Cedric Ross, who had been Gardner/Ross' senior partner, and granddaughter of the firm's founder. Sally, a university economics professor, reluctantly agreed to replace her father when he was charged with fraud, but she soon became hooked on the exciting world of trading. Following Cedric's death, Sally fights for the respect of her peers while securing her hold of power on the firm. She now assuredly exercises her authority and has served notice to the rest of the firm that she can be as tough, savvy and shrewdly pragmatic as her most hard-nosed male counterpart , even if it means stretching her integrity as far as it will go. Her growing confidence is off-putting to Adam and Jack, but as far as Sally's concerned, power becomes her. Sally turns 40 (#46 Boom)
"JACK LARKIN" (David Cubitt) Jack Larkin's stellar reputation on Bay Street took a beating when he was disgraced and humiliated in taking the fall for Gardner/Ross as he helped the firm stave off an attempted takeover. He was outwitted by a rival trader (whom he later assaulted), and betrayed by his former lover, Ayn, and bankrupted in the process. This was quite a tumble for brash, relentless, daring maverick who had earlier earned his position as a partner with the firm by saving it with a gutsy deal. Now on the periphery of Gardner/Ross, he is in the unfamiliar position of kow-towing and keeping his pride in check, unable to vent his anger at will as had been his privilege in the not-so-distant past. But Jack's also not the type to stay down for long. He won a bronze medal for boxing in the world games. Jack goes off the deep end after watching his fiancee Ayn die in an explosion meant for him. "ADAM CUNNINGHAM" (Bruce Gray) A senior partner at Gardner/Ross, Adam Cunningham is the shrewd and sometimes ruthless operator who, starting back in the 1960s, helped the firm become one of Toronto's leading independent investment houses. Adam's stiff eloquence marks him as part of the old guard of the financial establishment, preferring to use the "old boys network" to make his deals, but this disciple of the free market will also use whatever political influence will help him. He doesn't like to share his authority with relative newcomers like Sally and Jack, and he's not above profiting personally from clever speculation while the rest of the firm is in jeopardy. One always suspects that Adam, who would rather be respected than loved, has a secret agenda aimed at personal accumulation of power or money. Rarely is his human side shown, except in the first couple of seasons when he's dealing with his wife's illness and suicide, and in seasons 4 & 5 when his sister-in-law, Catherine, comes to stay with him and gives birth to their son, Matthew William. Catherine is a widow with a daughter, Briann (or Bri), and lived in Medicine Hat.
"MARTY STEPHENS" (Patrick McKenna) Marty Stephens is the head trader at Gardner/Ross who rules his trading pit with incessant nervous energy, a cynical and profane wit and the sometimes blind loyalty of his traders, which is just as well, since he brooks no challenge to his authority. Marty dismisses such niceties as legalities and ethics if they run counter to his insider information or gambling intuition. Manic when in pursuit of a deal and given to panic-stricken fits of paranoia when his strategies don't pan out, Marty remains a minor legend on Bay Street for his usually infallible instincts. Marty's been married to Barb for 20 years, and they have two sons: Randy & Mark and a daughter, Bridget (Dancing with Mr D). Marty turns 40 in This World... then the Fireworks. "AYN KRYWARIK" (Kim Huffman) Ayn Krywarik has built a reputation as a reliable, expert trader, but has also learned to be a fierce competitor, especially with her male associates at Gardner/Ross. Feeling that she must instill fear in others to inspire respect, she runs into trouble when she tries to run her personal life with as much calculation as she does her professional life, leading her to betray Jack, contribute to his bankruptcy and resign from Gardner/Ross in the messy aftermath. Having alienated her colleagues, she nevertheless remains a valued commodity at the firm and works to rebuild burnt bridges. After getting her life back on track, she becomes frustrated with trading and leaves Gardner Ross to work in Columbia. Jack promises to join her in a few days and put her into his car to go to the airport. As he watches the car drive away, he's devastated when it explodes. As a Vice-President of Corporate Finance at Gardner/Ross, Donald continues to prove that he's no mere yes-man. Often acting as the conscience of the firm, whose principals occasionally feel that Donald can be painstaking to a fault in his research on the ethical, social and environmental impacts of their dealings, Donald's greatest gift may be his ability to broker a profitable deal without compromising his values.

"GRANT JANSKY" (David Hewlett) Grant Jansky comprises the entire derivatives department, an arrangement which suits him and Gardner/Ross just fine, since he's a genius at making money and no one else at the firm understands derivatives. Grant is the perfect illustration of the expression "doesn't get out much". The computer savant squirrels himself away with his state-of-the-art computer hardware in the dark, converted closet that serves as his office, rarely coming out to get his social skills up to speed in the first four seasons. By the fifth season, Grant is located on the floor with the rest of the traders. Though reclusive, shy, naïve and naturally non-conformist, Grant is perhaps the gentlest, most loyal soul amongst the cutthroats in his milieu.
"BENNY SEIDLEMAN" (Ron Gabriel) At 48 (ep 25 - Middle Ground), trader Benny Seidleman is something of a senior citizen in a young person's game and his laconic, good-natured demeanour often contrasts with the frenzy of the trading floor. Nevertheless, Benny is adapting from the hand-waving, shouting traditions of the Stock Exchange to the digital age, donning a headset and becoming adept at quickly scanning computer screens. The breakup of his 22 year marriage to Rhonda and his new relationship with Jack's sister Cathy, a much younger co-worker, are equally stringent tests of his adaptability. "CARL DAVISON" (Phil Akin) Compliance officer
"CHRISTOPHER TODSON" (Chris Leavins) Christopher Todson is Gardner/Ross' foreign exchange trader. The borderline fanatical student of military history could just as easily be a member of a radical militia group if he didn't get the same thrill of battle on the trading floor. Even so, Chris is often frustrated by Marty's refusal to let him perform at what he considers his true level of brilliance. An ambitious strategist with a deadpan manner, Chris pulls few punches and always has a sarcastic remark at the ready. But despite his somewhat crude "every man for himself" ideology, Chris also has a very sophisticated side with a surprisingly erudite wit. In the 5th season, Chris moves upstairs. Seduced at 18. When the affair is found out, he was shunned by his community and left. Chris' father dies of a heart attack (#81 Money Shot) and he doesn't attend the funeral.
"ZIGGY McLEOD" (Angela Vint) Ziggy McLeod is Gardner/Ross' receptionist, who provides front desk appeal while appreciating the charms of young, handsome, ambitious men like Jack, D'Arby and newcomer Ian Farnham. The coming year, though, promises changes for her at Gardner/Ross and the opportunity for her career to grow thanks to her perky personality and its underlying attitude. (age 24 #44 in A Friend in Need or #55 Six Degrees of Duplicity)
"IAN FARNHAM" (Gabriel Hogan) On the surface, Ian Farnham is simply a precocious, guileless young man full of boyish charm and enthusiasm and an aptitude for finance, but that belies his acute intelligence and ambition. Ostensibly the replacement for Jack, Ian is the son of Adam's influential friend, Pauline Drury, and is eager to prove his acumen with Gardner/Ross.
"FAITH COLERO" (Pamela Sinha) Young, tough, plain-talking corporate lawyer Faith Colero is initiated into Gardner/Ross under the worst possible conditions, with the survival of the firm in doubt and one of its principals, Jack, facing an assault charge and being uncooperative. Still, she refuses to let the circumstances or the firm's partners intimidate her, just as she refuses to let the interests of the firm seduce her into searching out legal loopholes. The letter of the law and her own code of ethics take precedence over corporate expedience.
