"'...encourages unintelligible analysis.'
I know exactly what that guy on the committee during the meeting meant. The show was unintelligible, therefore, this review will most likely be unintelligible as well. At first, I absolutely loved the episode. I was literally bouncing after the show ended. But then I watched it again. And then went back and looked at a few other bits again today. And it's not a great episode. It's good, yes, and I know that the movie was a damn hard act to follow, but... I expected a little more. I guess we all set our expectations too high.
"Next time I'll wear a clown suit and do balloon tricks."
That would be quite fitting, considering that "stupid-ass haircut" (to quote from Mulder in 'Piper Maru') he was sporting. I had hoped it would have grown out by now. It really threw me for most of the episode. I can't get used to Mulder having that haircut. That's David. I was watching David last night. This might take some getting used to. The other half of the partnership's fashion was good, though. I really liked Scully's hair, and the suits she was wearing were also very nice. I especially like that shirt. Doesn't she seem like the kind of person to shop at Banana Republic?
"Diana...back on your feet. Guess that's the only way you can stab me in the back."
Yep. With a long, twisted dagger. I just detest that woman. Yes, I think she could be a great character on this show, and she could set up some interesting situations between Mulder and Scully, but Chris and the gang haven't learned how to use her yet. I'm not quite sure what they're doing with her character. Was she helping Mulder? Because she went out of her way to get him and drag him to the nuclear plant. But then she sounded an alarm and held him at gunpoint. And she left him dangling by a fraying thread with her report of the whole thing. Oh, and does anyone know how old Diana is supposed to be? Because she just looks so much older than Mulder. Has Mulder suddenly forgotten his distaste for his first name? He never flinched, frowned, sighed or corrected Diana when she called him Fox throughout that episode. And I'm not enjoying the Mulder-Diana/Batman and Robin thing they have going. It was just wrong when that one shot showed their silhouettes as they ran and she was almost as tall as him and had long hair. Just wrong.
"This boy could be our last best chance."
Once again, Scully thinks 'we' and Mulder thinks 'I'. She knows she wants to continue working with Mulder, but he still considers the X-Files his. But it's incredibly infuriating when Scully starts in with her skepticism routine again after being inside an alien ship and then ridding the frigging thing like a bucking bronco. She saw that hole in the ice. That wasn't made by any polar bear or penguin. Yes, I know the writers tried to explain it away by having Scully tell Mulder (in a hand-holding moment that I think they should have saved for the end of the episode) that she has to maintain her skepticism because that's what makes Mulder a "whole person", but the whole thing just doesn't sit well with me.
"Woah! There's something back there."
Yeah, we know, Mulder. So it's very smart of you to go wedging yourself in next to it and stretching out your hand so you can touch the thing. Mulder seems to be a very touchy-feely person when it comes to everything except other people. He goes sticking his hand in everything he sees. As if that'll tell him something. I'm waiting for the day it's some kind of potent acid and it melts his finger off. Like in 'Squeeze' (or was it 'Tooms?') when he fingered the bile coating Tooms' nest? And then last night he was putting his fingerprints all over the crime scene he wasn't supposed to be at, and then at the power plant, he was trying to touch everything in sight. "Oh, gooey! Fun!"
"Ditto."
OK, I know this has a very thin tie-in to the X-Files, but have any of you seen the movie 'Ghost' with Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze? In that movie, Demi always says "I love you" straight out, but Patrick would only answer with "Ditto." I thought it was cute. But I actually really liked that scene. Like the movie, it's always cute when Mulder gets spooked by his cell phone. And the conversation between Mulder and Scully and the fact that Mulder felt the need to keep it from Diana was wonderful. Actually, a lot of this episode reminded me of the movie. Just that way it was set up, I guess.
"Frankenstein? Really?"
And with those two words, Gibson Praise steals the show. He was gorgeous. I really love that kid. His role in the end of the episode was extremely strange, but I guess he couldn't help that. I think Jeff Gulka has his role down pat. Like my fellow G-Gal said, I loved the part where Gibson tells CSM that he knows he's scared of him. And the added bonus for that little scene was the fact that Gibson was protecting Mulder and Scully by making sure nobody went into the house to find them.
"I'm a very special lab rat."
I think it's awfully unfair of Gibson to be saying that Scully doesn't care about him. How could someone not? Of course Scully cares! Gibson thinks she's only after the answers Gibson can provide her with, but I'm convinced it's more than that. After loosing Emily, Scully's been very motherly. You could see the concern when she carefully picked up his head in the car and tried to wake him: "Gibson? Gibson sweetie? Gibson! Sweetheart? Oh, God..." You can't tell me she was only interested in what she could gain from him at that moment. And didn't she look so natural when she was talking to him after taking off the bandages? Leaning over him on the bed like that?
"God Almighty."
And we have our new WMM! White-haired-English-dude, come on down! Do you all know who I'm talking about? They got an old guy, with white hair and a British accent and plugged him right into the consortium. He's even got a variation of WMM phrase to go with it: "God Almighty" instead of the often used "Dear God!" As long as we're talking about the consortium, let's take a look at CSM. I liked it how he called Spender "Son" at the end of the episode, but do you al realize what has happened? We basically have CSM running the X-Files. With Spender in there, the X-Files are owned by him. Great move, CC. How are you gonna dig yourself out of this one, huh?
"It comes down to a matter of trust." - "You're asking me to make a choice?" - "I'm asking you to trust my judgment. I'm asking you to trust me."
Hmm. So Mulder no longer trusts her? When was trust ever an issue with these two? They are the only people they can trust. I liked the dialogue, though. But Mulder was being an ass. I can't believe he would even have to make a choice. I would think it would be obvious which one he'd stick with. No, Mulder, you don't know which one I'm talking about? I'll give you a hint: the one who wasn't holding you at gunpoint after turning you in at the power plant!!
"It would mean we all are."
OK, I see that the above quote is kind of obscure. Scully says it when she tells Mulder that we all have alien DNA in us, but that it's just not turned on. Ready for my theory? It works well with this episode, actually. Hang on to your helmets, you're in for a bit of a ride. I think that (according to The X-Files) humans evolved from monkeys. Following me so far? Then we evolved into the aliens--the grays. But humans were no match for these new beings, so we died off. Think of it like Cro-Magnon Man vs. us. He wouldn't survive in our society, right? So we all died off, and the "aliens", or "higher beings" were left. After many years, they built a time machine so the could go back and study what we were like--a sort of really in-depth history course. So they come to us in a spaceship (time machine), abduct us, perform tests, etc., to see what we were like. They don't care about killing us, because they know we'll die off anyway. The people that were taken for good (ie. Mrs. Spender) are probably in zoos in the advanced time. Or labs or something. And the funky aliens we saw in the movie were just the babies that eventually grow up into what we're used to seeing on the show--the adult gray. So? Think I'm nuts? Think I'm brilliant? Tell me!
ODDS AND ENDS
* The music doesn't fit right with all this sunshine and dry hills. Nope. Get the rain back!
* The tag line wasn't changed! Argh. You would have thought...
* The main woman on the committee at the beginning of the episode can be seen as Nina Van Horn on Just Shoot Me, an NBC sitcom. Her character "J. Maslin" is definitely at the other end of the spectrum from her full-time comedy work...
* Gotta love those two liners. "I didn't see Men In Black." "Damn good movie."
* Mulder's office looks fantastic! But he doesn't get to use it! Too bad. It even had a plant. But where will he work now? Does he get another office? Will Scully ever get a desk? And will the desk in the basement office go to Spender or Diana? Figures, the male will take it over.
* Scully's back! Our wonderful old mummble-under-your-breath-at-your-inconsiderate-partner-Scully. "Why do I bother?"
* It was nice how they continued the hot-cold theory from the movie. The aliens crave heat to gestate--they go to a power plant. If you want to slow the gestation process way down--you freeze them, or go to the arctic.
* Was anyone else disturbed by the fade from Mulder's face to Spender's? Should I even suggest...? Nah. Too scary a concept.
