On Sunday, October 25, 1997, the episode, "Gethsemane", aired for the second time. It had originally aired on May 18, 1997. That episode of The X-Files was the 24th, and final episode, of the fourth season.

Scully
In the season finale, "Gethsemane", the events of the episode are being told by Agent Scully to a panel of F.B.I. officers. She explains to them the invalidity of Agent Mulder's work on the X-Files. Mulder was contacted by Dr. Arlynsky who claimd to have discovered a corpse of an extraterrestrial biological entity. Mulder, of course, follows this man and his word to the Yukon Territory. Scully, who refused to go with him, and whose cancer has begun to spead throughout her blood stream, "runs into" a man named Michael Kritschgau who works for the Department of Defense. Kritschgau explains to Scully the ways in which Mulder, and herself, have been decieved. He also tells Scully that the men who are the source of the lies gave her cancer to make Mulder believe. The episode concludes with Mulder extremely upset in his apartment and with a saddend Scully telling the board of F.B.I. officers that Agent Mulder died the previous night from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Below, are a few quotes from the episode and the ratings submitted by XFEOS members. They are followed with the comments and opinions on "Gethsemane".

Scully to Board Members: "I come here today, four years later, to report on the illigitimacy on Agent Mulder's work. That it is my scientific opinion that he became over the course of these years a victim. A victim of his own false hopes and in his belief in the biggest of lies."

Dr. Arlensky: "It is my sincere belief that what we have here is the complete corpsus of an extraterrestrial biological entity, absolute and irrefutible."

Mulder: "You think it's foolish?"
Scully: "I have no opinion, actually."
Mulder: "You have no opinion?"
Scully: "This is your holy grail, Mulder, not mine."
Mulder: "What is that supposed to mean?"
Alien Autopsy
Scully: "It just means that proving to the world the existence of alien life is not my last dying wish."
Mulder: "How about Santa Clause or the Easter Bunny? This is not some selfish pet project of mine, Scully, I'm as skeptical of that man as you are. But proof, definitive proof of sentient beings sharing time and existence with us, that yould change everything. Every truth we live by would be shaken to the ground. There is no greater revelation imaginable, no greater scientific discovery."
Scully: "You already believe, Mulder. What difference will it make? I mean what will proof change for you?"
Mulder: "If someone could prove to you the existence of God, would it change you?"
Scully: "Only if it had been disproven."
Mulder: "Then you accept the possibility that the belief in God is a lie?"
Scully: "I don't think about it, actually, and I don't think it can be proven."
Mulder: "But what if it could be, wouldn't that knowledge be worth seeking? Or is it just easier to gon on believing the lie?"
Alien Autopsy
Scully: "I can't go with you, Mulder."

Scully to Board Members: "What I couldn't tell Agent Mulder, what I had only just learned myself, was that the cancer which had been diagnosed in me several months earlier had metastasized. And the doctors told me short of a miracle, it would continue to aggressively invade my body, advancing faster each day towards the inevitable."

Michael Kritschgau: "If you arrest me, they'll kill me."
Scully: "I don't know what you're talking about."
Kritschgau: "The same people who are trying to kill you, the people who gave you your cancer."

Scully to Board Members: "[Kritschgau] told me a story which detailed, point by point, the systematic way in which Agent Mulder had been deceived and used, and how I as his partner had been led down the same path, loosing a family member due to my alligence and contracting a fatal disease which I was being told was engineered by the men who were responsible for Agent Mulder's deception."

Scully: "Mulder, the only lie here is the one that you continue to believe!"

Mulder: "What the hell did [Kritschgau] say to you that you believe his story?"
Scully: "He said that the men behind this hoax, behind these lies, gave me this disease to make you believe."

Scully to Board Members: "Early this morning, I got a call from the police asking me to come to Agent Mulder's apartment. The detective asked me...he needed me to identify a body. (pauses) Agent Mulder died late last night from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head."
