The Rain King

"Like a well executed cloud formation that never manifests into a hurricane, this episode has me grabbing my umbrella but not sealing the windows of my home.Sure, the X-Files is still welcome rain in the television drought, but has it's own reservoir been filled? Duchovny, if magazine quotes are to be believed, is tired of Mulder, and Anderson, a gifted actress, seems tired of Scully. Their performances seem somehow less channeled than usual, as if they are a few raindrops short of a full irrigation duct. I found the basic storyline to be a mid to large-size stupidity flood, but the comprehensive response by the television production paramedics and a few bring in the rescue chopper (comedy + cow swiping?) scenes save the episode from being declared a complete disaster area. The one thing that is really dismal about this season's episodes and this episode in particular, is the writers endless mulling over the definition of the Mulder and Scully relationship. X-Files creators talk about how a sexually romantic relationship between Mulder and Scully would ruin the show, but they are ruining it already in trying to define the Mulder and Scully relationship within the context of the show. Cut it out already! I have my own X-File and it goes like this...Chris Carter, a man who can control the events that play out on his television screen, does not permit Mulder and Scully to get together ever, not even in the final episode or movie, and does not allow a definitive conclusion to the series at all. He demands that the series end open ended, with no resolutions, enigmatic, as if Mulder and Scully will always be out there...searching for the truth. He feels that as cultural legends with a deep resonance Mulder and Scully could never settle down and so he leaves Mulder and Scully investigating X-Files at the shows end. He demands that the writers, whom he also has an uncanny influence over, get the foggy notion of a Mulder and Scully romance out of their heads altogether and gets his plane off the ground toward it's first and most essential destination, a runway of scary stories full of wonder and mystery."

"Here we go again, another "NEW" for X-Files. A love story, can you believe it? I really didn't think they could pull it off, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't grinning like an idiot when our Local Weather Man confessed his love for Big Blonde with Mulder and Scully looking on and swaying in the music. It was a really original plot. More so than usual, the only other X-Files involving the weather was "D.P.O.," and while it was entertaining it didn't bring out the magic that has been shown time and time again this season. Not only was "The Rain King" satisfactory plot wise, there were enough personnel moments for Mulder and Scully to keep a mediocre fan interested. Scully's comment about the blind leading the blind was memorable, and so was the cow falling in on Mulder. But as much as I enjoyed this episode I have to say that I'm surprised Chris is conforming to normal television statistics. Each week Mulder and Scully's imagined "relationship" appears more and more. The actually romantic plot and quest of the X-Files are becoming secondary to Mulder and Scully's relationship. I'm all for them being good friends, but not romantically involved, and certainly not at the expense of the X-Files. I'm disappointed, I thought Chris was smarter than that. Anyway, I'll worry about that if it happens. The weather effects were really great, I loved the heart shaped hail and the minny tornado among other aspects. And finally, it was a really sweet ending, I can't see any two people who so obviously belong together more than Big Blonde and The Local Weather Man."

"Weird plot line (what else is new), but yet again we see the new and improved quirky sense of humor. I loved the reaction from Scully when Mulder informs her that he will be coaching Mr. Rain Man himself in the oft confusing and frustrating ways of the woman. "The blind leading the blind." Her initial behavior of silence set the mood of her incredulous reaction perfectly. I wonder if Rain Man had this talent as a child, can you imagine the repurcussions of not buying him the Transformer that he wanted for Christmas? Or as a baby? Every time he had a butt rash, the heavens would rain cats and dogs. Victoria Jackson was fair, she did her overused character of a blonde bimbo."

"That was such a funny episode. Talk about some serious foreshadowing of the Mulder-Scully relationship. Everyone thought that they were together. They were asking why they had never even kissed. Then Scully said that the best relationships were built on solid friendships. I think that this episode was a precursor to many more exposing their true feelings for each other."

"This was a funny episode, and I have to say I did like it. It just did not seem to be something I would ever expect to see from this show. Nothing like that could ever happen. And I believe Chris Carter has said that the one thing all the stories must comply with is at least being on the edge of extreme possibility. I just can't see that with this episode. Other than that, it was fun to watch."

"'The Rain King' had the potential to be hysterically funny, but the s-l-o-w pacing made it all seemed forced."
