"Somewhere inside the jumble of quality, in between the mythology and one shot episodes is a better more profound show than what the X-Files has become. The show is in desperate need of some kind of focus. It's desperate for any kind of substance. When Skinner cries in this episode he might as well be laughing. How can a watcher of the show take him or the X-Files seriously after it has gone so far overboard into the territory of the absurd? The shows central mythology is interesting and seems to have found some kind of formula, the show just needs to reel it in and stop casting for new fish. Also too many outrageous one shot episodes make the more serious mythology episodes clash in tone. The show the X-Files is modeled after..the Night Stalker had the problem of having the main character fight a different monster every week and thus the whole thing became completely silly after awhile. There's only so much a show like the X-Files can take which is why the mythology episodes were good in bringing things together under a central theme. If the producer's wanted to prolong the run of the show they should have explored the many characters and developments that they created in their mythology and made the one shot episodes, which there were too many of this season, more infrequent."

"I am terribly ambivalent about this episode. It was the best of the season hands down despite my previous misgivings, but that last damned line of Scully's took 5 points off of the score. The implications!!!! The possibilities!!! The Ramifications!!! HARK! Is that a plot I hear crashing to bits in the background? It was Herman Hess, in his book Demian that said that with each new life an old one must be destroyed. I feel for him, with the birth of this baby, the only thing that could happen in the imminent demise of X-Files as we know it. Scully can't have a baby. What would she do with it? I don't want the focus of the show to shift to her morning sickness or sleepless nights in those terrible post birth months. I want to watch X-files!!! And I can't believe Mulder's not going to back for half the season!!! How will it work?!?! It can't!!! Curses to FOX network who couldn't let them go!! Curses! Originality foiled again!"
