The Sixth Extinction

"It's the beginning of the end. How strange to see such role reversals. Normally, Scully gets her personal life screwed while Mulder makes some other monumentally discovery. Not this time apparently. Two little problems: Wonder Woman Scully with a machete. Now, this would have given some comic overtones throughout the entire episode if I didn't have a vague notion of how they confiscate your gun at airports. Still, that was a little silly. As were those infernal voice overs. I can't stand voice overs! There are too many in 'X-Files!' Anyway, two different plots going on in this episode I think. The first and more interesting is that 'The X-Files' is agnostic, you don't see that in many shows. Except with this episode I don't know if they were trying to encompass the plagues or not. Water turning to blood, grasshoppers, boils from the water....what next, death of the first born? There goes Mulder. The next plot line was that of Mulder's new found clairvoyance. Now, is this like Gibson? When Scully said he was more alive than he has ever been, that his body can't contain his aliveness, that plot line wasn't like Gibson's but it seems like they have the same type of clairvoyance. I don't know what they're going to do with this plot line. How can Mulder just continue on being clairvoyant? The 3rd episode goes back to a something-or-other eating monster, so something must happen to rectify the situation. After those two points, it just doesn't seem like 'The X-Files' has any more rules, I think I mentioned that before, but it's more apparent now than ever. Scully discovering the answer to the unanswerable? Mulder regressing back to our ancestry which may in fact be extraterrestrial? Scully getting a message from God? Yup, it's an X-File all right. I gave this episode an eight because I'm cautious about continuations...look what happened with 'Dreamland II.' I'll give final judgment next week when they conclude this. Can't wait, Mulder in a "It's a Wonderful Life" scenario, Scully, believing, never thought the day would come. One last thought, if this arc ends and Scully tells Mulder that some things aren't meant to be discovered and persuades him to back off I'll scream, if they're going to wave something like that in my face they better have an explanation and not one of those new age, "let it be" minds. Yup, that's about it, great episode, it was a long summer. The end is coming!"

"Swarms, and rivers of blood, Mulder remote viewing, murderous undead...it seems as if some secrets are better left not knowing, however biblical prophecy will suggest that what was once a good formula for a show will remain so. Having Mulder constantly on the verge of becoming a fatality adds no real drama to the show. Of course he won't die, so it becomes just a vehicle for Scully to do her facial empathy/pain expressions for the camera. I've seen enough of that, put someone else in jeopardy, someone who is not a main character, someone who we know might die and it would add to the suspense. I liked the way Skinner was played in this episode--good acting by Mitch Pileggi. Anderson was captivating as always, she seems to command the small screen better than the movie screen. She really burns through the television screen. The story was an interesting combination of biblical wrath, human genome, and alien plot lines, combining the main elements of The X-Files..mythological mayonnaise, modern science special sauce and alien craft cheese into a kind of X-Files Big Mac. Also, at this point in the game the vague conspiracy angle should be dropped for a more literal kind of story, instead of building it up to the point where it no longer holds anything for the viewer save frustration. The main plot was outlined at the end of the X-Files music CD and hopefully the shows creators will just run with that and stop adding on to it. There comes a point when that mystery crap just has to stop. Also, I would like to mention that the X-Files new official website is really good, as well as the fact that I flew out to LA this summer for a career related reasons and got to see the studio where the X-Files is shot as well as shout out my appreciation of Ms. Anderson's talents to her while in the crowd at the Emmys. She was very nice and classy."

"All together a good episode. I liked seeing Scully over in Africa, and I was especially moved by Scully telling Mulder to 'hold on' with tears in her eyes near the end of the episode. Good premiere, hoping next week will be just as good if not better."

"I thought everything was excellent...how they had the plagues (swarms of bugs, boils, sea of blood...). I also found the aspect of not knowing what was happening to Mulder, and whether or not he reciprocated Diana's feelings, or heard what Scully was saying and the emotion behind her voice. I was also amazed after watching the episode a second time with the question of if Mulder read Scully's thoughts and now knows that she loves him...sorry, I am a shipper! :) An excellent way to start a new season!"

"The most action we got out of Mulder was a stair at the walls; it got tired after a while. I'm hoping this phase passes through soon."

"It would have been a higher rating if Fowley had not been misused."
