Terma

"The Black Cancer is a perfect metaphor for the nasty little secrets that governments tend to have and cover up, slimy things, all jumbled up into one big black mass."

-Michael B.-

On Sunday, August 24, 1997, the episode, "Terma", aired for the second time. It had originally aired on December 1, 1996. That episode of The X-Files was the tenth episode of season four. It continued from where the episode,"Tunguska", ended. "Terma" had an unusual change in it's opening sequence in that in place of the words "The Truth Is Out There", was "E Pur Si Muove". During this episode, Mulder escapes from the prison camp in Tunguska, taking Krycek with him. Scully is charged with contempt of congress for refusing to answer the question concerning Mulder's location. As a result, Scully is sent to jail, a rather nice one in fact, until the next session. Meanwhile, Krycek, lost in the forest, gets his left arm cut off so he won't be subjected to the black cancer tests. At the second congressional metting, Scully is refusing to answer the question about Mulder when, to everyone's surprise, Mulder walks in and says, "What is the question?". Personally, I feel that the look on Scully's face at that moment is an extremely memorable and touching part of the episode.

Below, are some quotes and strong conversations from the episode. The ratings submitted by XFEOS members are followed with the intriging comments and opinions on "Terma". XFEOS is still waiting on a lot of the returned surveys. This page will continually be updated as they arrive.

Prisoner to Mulder: "You have been exposed to the black cancer."

Cigarette Smoking Man: "Wake the Russian bear, and it may find we've stolen its honey."

Skinner: "I can understand you protecting Agent Mulder, but..."
Scully: "It is not just Agent Mulder that I'm protecting, sir."
Skinner: "Then, what are you doing?"
Scully: "We were called before this committee to answer questions about a murder. About an intercepted diplomatic pouch. A pouch that was to be delivered to a prominent doctor, a woman, who is now dead, as is the man who was delivering this pouch. The contents of which have infected an exobiologist with a paralysing toxin. Yet, what are we stuck on here? The where-abouts of Agent Mulder."
Skinner: "You mean it's the wrong question?"
Scully: "Several of the men on this committee are lawyers. It is my experience that lawyers ask the wrong question only when they don't want the right answer."
Skinner: "Unless Agent Mulder has already found the answers thay're looking for."
Scully: "Or someone wants to make sure that he doesn't find them."

Scully: "But, I am not inclined to follow my own judgement in this case."
Skinner: "So, you're going to follow Agent Mulder's."

Mulder to Scully: "It's good to put my arms around you...both of them."

Terry Mayhew: "Sadam used it [black cancer] in the Gulf."
Scully: "You mean used as bio-warfare?"
Mayhew: "That's why thay made those servicemen take all them pills. U.S. government knew about the black cancer. They lied. Didn't have no cure. No inolation."

Mulder: "You said there were two devices. What happened to the other bomb?"
Mayhew: "I ate it."

Congressman Sorenson: "What evidence are you then presenting us with today?"
Scully: "Documents and interviews in support of a wide-ranging conspiracy to control a lethal bio-toxin that is in fact extraterrestrial."
Sorenson: "What...are...are we talking about little green men, here?"
Scully: "No, sir, not at all."
Mulder: "Why is this so hard to believe? When the accepted discovery of life off this planet is on the front page of every newspaper around the world. When even the most conservative scientists and science journals are calling for the exploration of Mars and Jupiter. With every reason to believe that life, and the persistance of it, is thriving outside our own terrestrial sphere. If you can't get past this, the I suggest that this whole committee be held in contempt for ignoring evidence that can't be refuted."

"Part two of this episode is armless enough. Good thing for Krycek that it was just a two parter or the writers, Carter and Spotnitz, would have eventually turned him into a bruised and bloody stump. This is definitely a "trust no one episode". The Black Cancer being a perfect metaphor for the nasty little secrets that governments tend to have and cover up, slimy things, all jumbled up into one big black mass. The X-Files is distinctly 90's in that it shows the end of the millenium disgust the American people have for their government. With scandal after scandal being thrown at them, real or concocted, the American public expects to be exposed to a different strain of The Black Cancer every week. Although you have to love the hammy whispered evil of William B. Davis in his portrayal of the Cigarette Smoking Man, it is the restrained performances of Anderson and Duchovny that really make episodes like this work. Anderson and Duchovny are brilliant in every one of their scenes, but then again that is only what we have come to expect from the two best actors in television. David Gauthier and his special effects department made me believe in the existence of the Black Cancer. Speaking of cancer, some advice for Cigarette Smoking Man, "You better stop smoking those things, bad for the health you know." Sometimes you can't trust anyone, not even yourself."

"Much better the second time around but still bloody confusing: Did CSM arrange for Mulder to escape? What's with the whole smallpox vaccination scar and the left arm thing? The scar itself holds DNA information/tags for cataloguing people; the peasants severed their arms becauseŠ.? (In a way, didn't the Russians do Mulder a favor by removing it?) Since Bill Mulder was in on the whole "merchandise" project, why did he allow his children to be tagged like everyone else? Does Mulder have the Black Cancer or did that vaccine the gulag goons injected into him protect him? How did Mulder & Scully go from DC to Florida to Terma, North Dakota in 14 hours?! Yeah, yeah, the same way Scully drove from DC to Providence in twoŠthis IS the X-Files afterall."

"This weeks X -files was like any other I suppose. A great plot, impossible to lose interest in. I regret missing the episode which aired last Sunday which seemed to be linked to this weeks. I still easily caught up on what I had missed. I especially admire Mulder's crafty escape plan from that Russian prison camp. Speaking of Russians, hahaha, a very treacherous one got his payback once again. How's that arm Krycek??? This episode also displays how reliable the two agents know they can be to one another. I only hope if I have have a partner as reliable and trustworthy when I join the CIA. This two parter is excellent, definate classic."

"Terma certainly was confusing. The first time I saw it I didn't like the fact that they brought new characters in the second half, it was sort of confusing. That female doctor really had nothing to do with the plot. First time watchers of X-Files should not start on this episode. Does anyone else think Ratboy is for the Russians? I was surprised when Scully got jailed...and proud. Lastly, I don't think Mulder is cured from his black cancer, they never went into that. Also he never told Scully he was infected by it, I wonder..... I bet Chris Carter is saving it for some future episode."

"Excellent end two this gripping two parter! Terma was phenomomal! We shippers got to see a Mulder/Scully PUBLIC hug, and the adventure lovers got to see Mulder almost blown up when that truck blew up, which, by the way, had very realistic graphics. Poor Ratboy got his arm cut off. Nick Lea's screaming, my goodness, that even made me feel sorry for Krycek! Excellent performance by Nick Lea! A great ending to this amazing two parter!"
-Christina O.-

"I loved it!!! Especially the part when Mulder returns to USA and he goes into the court room. You can just feel the love, and you can see the sparkle in Scully's eyes! It's just so adorable! I wish they would get together. It's one of my faves."
-Ula B.-

"It was an excellant episode. Its was good to see Krycek feeling pain for once, but I wish they could have shown how Mulder got back."
-Kathleen B.-

"A great conclusion to last week's episode."
-Lisa K.-

"This was a really cool episode!."
