Young at Heart
"It was interesting to learn about a case Mulder had before he met Scully, his very first case with the Violent Crimes Unit."
-Julie C.-
The episode, "Young at Heart", originally aired on February 11, 1994. That episode of The X-Files was the 15th episode of the first season.
A case from
Mulder's past returns to haunt him as a string of random murders with a
familiar MO leads him to doubt the death of a man he put away on his
first Bureau case. John Barnett swore to "get" Mulder when Mulder's
testimony put him behind bars for life, but Barnett's death in prison
put an end to that threat. Or so Mulder thought. After Mulder's former supervisor is
murdered, Mulder uncovers a strange story of illegal prison experiments
and bizarre medical research. Unless Mulder can find him first, the vengeful Barnett
may make Scully his next victim.

"To start off, I was LMAO at the "Regg-ie! Regg-ie!" from Mulder in the
beginning. Funny funny!! It's really too bad Reggie had to die. He's the
only person other than Scully that seems to be Mulder's friend. (Well,
actually, no. But I'll come back to that later.)
Did you know that "perdre" in french means "to loose", and if you
congigate (sp?) it into the past tense, it's "perdu" and it means
"lost"!! I thought that was kind of fitting... Reggie lost... his life
and Mulder to the X-Files. I think I'm looking for things that aren't
really there....
I loved the conversation Mulder had with Reggie. When he was telling
Mulder about being "Spooky" and how he was a liability. Reggie was
Mulder's friend. And he *respected* him. You don't see that from a lot
of agents in the bureau. Plus, once again, we are reminded that our
G-man is *incredibily* smart!! And, as we all know, Smart Is Sexy.... "I
got pissed off looking at you. But then I saw how your *mind* works. How
you're always 3 steps ahead of everyone else." I think Scully needs to
hear that more often.
I was cracking up at the notes Barnett left for Mulder. "Fox". It
reminded me of Kitsunegari.... Coming back for revenge against Mulder.
I liked the actor they got to play Reggie. He was cool. But good things
never last on the XF....
OK, coming back to my comment that Mulder doesn't have any friends, but
that Reggie was one, and Scully is one. Now there's this "Henderson"
person he keeps going back to. I have a few things to say about her.
First of all, I liked her. She was good. Very funny. I loved the little
exchange:
M: "You're slipping, Henderson."
H: "Well, you only brought this in 10 minutes ago.... 10 minutes may be
enough time for you, Mulder... 'course, I wouldn't know that from
personal experience..."
We've gone over the amount of guys who have drooled over Scully, but how
about the number who drool over Mulder? And did you guys notice that
Mulder did his little sexual inuendos with her? So he doesn't only save
them for Scully. And Henderson actually *played* with him. Shot them
back at him. He must enjoy that more than Scully's little
"Mulder-grow-up" stares. And then there was this:
M: "Thanks, Henderson, I owe you one."
H: "Promises, promises..."
I, personally, love seeing Young-Mulder. Not littleboy-young, but VCS
young. Like "28 and fresh out of Quantico". I felt so bad for Mulder
just watching Scully watch the video of the ware-house bust. Awww...
I've added another scene to my "All-time Favorites Between M&S" pile.
The scene where Mulder's about to walk through a door, and Scully says,
"I thought he said he was going to *get* you," and all that follows is
great. They really were walking on thin ice with each other. Tension,
tension.... Plain tension is as good as sexual tension, don't you think?
I do. I loved how Mulder turned back around and shut the door, holding
his hands in front of him, just waiting, expecting an explanation from
Scully as to how she knew about the little "I'm going to get you" thing.
He was, like, acting like she was a little kid. "Did he show you the
video tape?" Ooohh.... And then that, "Now I've got a dead man robbing
jewelry stores and sending me haikus." His turning around and slamming
the door in her face was great. It was so obvious he was saying, "And
don't you dare follow me." A lot of people are really down on DDs acting
skills, but when he's not crying and trying to eat Scully's hands, he
does some pretty decent work, don't you think?
It was interesting how Mulder didn't shoot Barnett because it "wasn't by
the book." Much different from his present view, huh? Do you suppose it
was that incident that showed Mulder "the book" isn't all that it's
cracked up to be?
When Mulder went to watch the kid playing football (sorry, these
comments aren't in chronological order) and the photos were sitting on
his seat, I noticed something. Again. Not like I ever forgot it, but....
Mulder is drop-dead goregous! And *incredibly* photogenic. In every
single one of those photos he looked really good.
Oh, and I was laughing at the, "I'll get you, you son of a bitch!!"
thing. Everyone turned around to look at him....
The old Barnett looked like Jack Nicholson, don't you think? And the
young Barnett... He was cute...
Quick thing: I like the look Mulder gives Scully (just a watching look,
nothing *really* special) after he tells her he thinks Barnett is young
again and they get into the elevator. I love it when he just looks at
her. In silence.
When Barnett came after Scully in her apartment... Eeek! That's the most
scared I've been by an X-File in awhile. But it was such a.... violated,
I guess, feeling when Barnett was *in* her *home*. He was *there*.
I like Scully's kitchen. Very pretty, very homey. *Not*, may I say, the
kitchen of an Ice Queen.
Oooohh.... there's that violated feeling again. He could get onto her *
answering machine*....
I liked the crack about Scully being the target. Which, I thought, was a
pretty cool thing to do, really.
Eeeekk!! Mulder winked at Scully!!! But she didn't wink back...
I thought the scenes in the music hall were cool. Very effective,
visually.
Once again, GA was great as Injured-Scully when the first shot was
fired, but her fall backwards didn't look all that good. Then again,
I've never actually seen someone get shot like that, so I can't really
judge. And she looked *so* relieved when she felt the bullet in that
vest. I thought she was going for her cross. 'I feel like I've been
kicked in the ribs.' 'That bullet went through 8 layers of kevlar.
You're lucky to be alive.' "

"This episode was pretty good, and it was interesting to learn about a case Mulder had before he met Scully, his very first case with the Violent Crimes Unit. The ending was very exciting, too. I wish I could get copies of those pictures Barnett took of Mulder - he looked so good in them!"
