James Bond star Pierce Brosnan has talked for the first time about the heartache of seeing his stepson jailed for drink driving.

Chris, 24, will be released on Thursday after serving 3 months in Wormwood Scrubs, West London -- and his superstar dad will be waiting with open arms.

Pierce, whose new 007 movie Tomorrow Never Dies premieres tonight, was in the U.S. when film worker Chris was caught driving 3 times over the limit after a late-night club crawl with friends in North London.

Talking exclusively to Bizarre [Andy Coulson page], Pierce, 44, recalled "I got a phone call and was shocked to the absolute core.

"I was speechless and scared for him because the Scrubs is a tough, tough place. I was in America and powerless to help in any way.

"As far as I am concerned Chris is my son and it was so hard to see him jailed and be able to do absolutely nothing. I felt like my right arm had been cut off. I'm not complaining because what he did was a stupid thing but he has taken his punishment like a man and has stayed strong."

Pierce has not been able to visit or even speak with Chris, who he brought up as his own son after marrying his mother Cassandra 17 years ago. Her death from cancer in 1991 brought Pierce and Chris even closer together.

Since he was jailed they have kept in touch through weekly letters.

Pierce added: "I've tried just to be thankful that Chris didn't hurt himself or anyone else while he was out driving. He just made the mistake of going out in the car. He thought that as he was only 10 minutes from home he could get away with it but he couldn't.

"He comes out on Thursday and I can't wait to see him. Unfortunately he'll miss the premiere but we'll make damn sure we have a great Christmas together. I won't be waiting for him at the prison gates. I think we can both do without that particular scene -- but I'll be there at home for him.

"I'm proud of the way he has handled himself in there. He has used the time to write a script and has read a lot of books. I had my stupid moments when I was younger but the climate has changed now. You simply can't get away with drink-driving in this day and age. He has learnt that the hard way."

Pierce, who stepped into 007's shoes with the blockbuster GoldenEye, will be celebrating his second Bond success when Chris is released. Tomorrow Never Dies is simply superb.

Talks are already underway for Pierce's 3rd appearance pencilled in for 1999. And he hopes to have even more of a say about what should happen to the world's most famous spy.

He says: "I'd like us to find out more about the man, not just the agent. It would be interesting if he resigned and got sick of killing people and quit. Written the right way that could surprise audiences.

"He'd come back into service before the end of the film and hopefully he'll be driving a British car and not a BMW like in the last two movies. It would be fantastic if we could take Bond back to his British roots and give him an Aston again. There isn't a script for the next one yet but the talks have already started."

With two hits almost certainly under his belt now, has Pierce renegotiated a new fee yet? "That will start next week when everyone is hopefully raving about this one!" he laughed.

After a Christmas break with lover Keely, their baby son Dylan, Chris, daughter Charlotte, 25, and son Sean, 13, Pierce will start work on a new movie Grey Owl, based on a true story.

In the film directed by Lord Attenborough, he will play an American Indian leader who reveals on his deathbed that he was an Englishman.
