"Only the best people fight against all obstacles in pursuit of happiness." -- Juliet Hulme
Heavenly Creatures was the first movie that Kate Winslet appeared in. Kate played Juliet Hulme to Melanie Lynskey's Pauline Yvonne Parker. The film is based on the true story of Juliet and Pauline, who, in 1954 in Christ-chruch, New Zealand, murdered Pauline's mother and then were "detained at Her Majesty's pleasure" until their release in 1959. Some of Kate's fans say that the role of Juliet is Kate's best perfromance -- Kate was only 17 years old when she portrayed Juliet and made her splash onto the movie scene. Said Time magazine about Heavenly Creatures: "The film's serendipitous stroke was to find Winslet and...Lynskey...They are perfect, fearless in embodying teenage hysteria. They declaim their lines with an intensity that approaches ecstasy...The giggles that punctuate the girls' early friendship are not beneath Winslet and Lynskey. The screams that end the film are not beyond them."
