Wimbledon '98

Amrit's Tennis News!

Sam will probably add some news soon too!

5/7/98

Ok there isn't much news left as the tournament is coming to an end unfortunately. : ( Jana Novtna has won the ladies side of the tournament in a straight sets win against Natalie Tauziat. After losing in the finals of Wimbledon twice before she was victorious. As the Duchess said last year to Novotna, Novotna was third time lucky. The final was very different this year as it was played by two older player, Novotna being 29 and Tauziat being 30 years of age. It was a far cry from what had been expected, a final of youngsters! It was also interesting because they were two players who hadn't won the tournament before.
The men's final is tonight, it was another unexpected meeting between Goran Ivansevic and Pete Sampras. Although Sampras was expected to be in the final, many people wouldn't have picked Ivanisevic as a finals competitor. The 14th seed played extremely well against Krajicek and has played very well throughout the tournament, but will he be victorious over Sampras the top seed? Sampras is playing some of his best tennis after a shakey start to year. So far this year he hasn't won a Grandslam but I feel he is up to a good standard again and is definately in with a good chance tonight! We'll just have to wait and see! Sydney viewers can catch the men's singles final tonight at around 10.35pm on Channel 9.

3/7/98

We are now into the final rounds of the tournament. The ladies final is soon to be played and Novotna and Tauziat are the two finalists. Both these players have done huge upsets, Tauziat beating Lindsay Davenport the second seed and Jana Novotna beating Martina Hingis last night. Hngis hasn't seemed to be playing very well all tournament, she certainly wasn't playing like she did last year on her path to victory. Novotna has played superbly and beat poor Venus. I think she is going to be victorious in the final although Tauziat has played very well too. In the men's side, Pete Sampras seems confident and is playing tennis, as usual, at his very best standard. Henman is also playing very well and has done the English proud. More news tomorrow, until then bye and keep watching the tennis!

Just In- Breaking News!

Todd Woodbridge has been defeated by Todd Martin in a four set match. Oh well still three Aussies in the final 16 men.

29/6/98

Ok the news, its been rubbed off/deleted but this time its going to work out. Ok Amanda Coetzer is out, as is our dear Carlos Moya the two top favourites on our page. We are in the round of 16 and there are three Aussies. Well actually there are still some round three matches going on. Goran Ivansevic is now playing Vacek and I am yet to find out whether there is a fourth Aussie through to the Round of 16...Todd Woodbridge...is pr was battling against the other Todd, Todd Martin. Its the battle of the Todds! Not funny I know. If Woodie manages to get through we will have 4 Aussies out of 16 people meaning a quarter of the mens' draw will be Aussies! Wow! I was going to figure out the probabilty but I can't do that really without knowing who's playing who.
Not only are the Aussies doing well but the Brits are doing pretty well too. They have a women, Sam Smith in the Round of 16 (She beat the 8th seed- Conchita Martinez and has performed the best in Wimbledon since Virginia Wade when she won the tournament in the Jubille Year!) and of course Tim Henman- the 12th seed is still in. But will he sucumb to the force of Pat? Who knows but we'll find out tonight. We all know who Sam will be supporting! Pat has not only climbed the rankings he has also climbed our polls to sit beside Carlos in the top spot. Keep those votes coming in for your fav. players!
Anyway back to Wimbledon.
Now its not only the rain stopping play but a freak fire in a nearby building stopped play on Saturday forcing the Todd's match to be unfinished. Although Todd wanted to keep playing it was denied as there was a concern over crowd and player safety. Todd said the crowd should move to safety but that they should keep playing as there wasn't a threat to them. Shame they don't play on the first Sunday, it was annoying having no tennis on! So if theres not one problem there always one waiting around the corner!

The latest from Wimbledon is here...and yes now I can spell Wimbledon...kind of!!!
Ok the news...
Even though the unusual or maybe not so unusual English rain is hindering this years play at Wibledon the action is still flaring! Unfortunately it not so good news! : ( I have just heard that Carlos Moya a well picked favourite on our site has been knocked out of this years Wibledon, although this is not yet confirmed we can still hope. Sam's favourite, Pat Rafter is still in the draw after a good first round win. Rafter has picked up after a disappointing French Open. I have also heard that Marcelo Rios another favourite is out. Agassi another no. 1 with our site fans has also had a loss disappointing many of his fans including my Mum!
Now for the ladies...
Venus and Amanda our favourites are through after convinceing wins in the first round! Atleast on of my absolute favourites is still in! Graf is back and fighting as is Martina Hingis going in as favourite although not having quite as convincing a win as I expected!
Anyway back to the results now!
