Mitch Longley appeared in an episode of Vanishing Son titled "Single Flame"
in 1994. The show focused on the life of Jian Wa Chang, an Asian-American
falsely accused of murder. He went on the run to escape the police, hence
the title of the show.
In this episode Jian Wa returns to Oakland, California, where his ex-
girlfriend, Lon Shi, lives with her family. Mitch's character, Justin
Heslin, is romantically involved with Lon Shi.
Based on the characters' conversations, the family had a run in with the Ku
Klux Klan and had to uproot from their previous home and relocate in
Oakland. Lon Shi's brother, Hung, hates all white men as a result of the
incident and forbids Lon Shi to see Justin. While Justin and Lon Shi are
open-minded enough to understand that love prevails over cultural
differences, noone around them shares the same view.
Justin's brother, Terry, runs a gambling network and is leader of a gang
called the High Street Bank Boys. His group has a feud going with an
Asian-American gang called the Red Circle Clan who want to take away their
gambling business. In an attempt to get revenge on Terry (and at the
"white man" in general), Hung joins the Red Circle so that he can fight.
It's revealed that Justin is paraplegic as a result of being shot by gang
members who came looking for Terry. Justin was in the wrong place at the
wrong time: Not finding Terry, the gang members went after Justin
instead. When Terry tells Justin that "those people" did that to him,
Justin replies, "...YOU put me in this chair." There is obvious bitterness
between Terry and Justin. Terry forbids Justin to see Lon Shi, even taking
Justin and keeping him locked up in a house so he is not able to see her.
The evening arrives when the confrontation between the gangs will take place.
However, Hung goes to the house not looking to fight, but looking to solve
things. Terry sees him and does not believe that Hung is unarmed. Gunfire
erupts. Jian Wa arrives to help, and Lon Shi comes, too. She finds Justin in
the room and tells him that the two of them can escape.
Unfortunately, she looks outside the bedroom and thinks Jian Wa (who will
help them leave) is coming. Instead, it is Terry who rounds the corner and
shoots her. She stumbles back into the room into Justin's arms. Jian Wa
and Hung rush in to find Justin and Lon Shi together. Just before dying,
her final plea to them is, "Promise me this stops here."
As a result of what she said, Hung begins to change his views. As the show
ends, he is walking his nephew, Di Bao, to attend school with the white
children (something which he'd forbidden Di Bao to do previously).
