Takes place several years after the events part IV. Tommy Jarvis, who killed Jason, is mentaly unstable. He is confined to a halfway house. After one of the paitents kills another a sereis of Jason style murders begins. At the end the Fake-Jason is discovcered to be a parametic named Roy. The Paitent who was murdered was his son. Seeing the hacked up body pushed him over the edge. Back at the mental hospitle Tommy has a dream about killing Pam. The movie ends with Tommy poised to kill Pam, weather or not he strikes is not shown; it is also possable that he was just deaming.
Even though Paramount had said that part 4 would be the last, the fact that it made a lot of money made them start work on part 5 almost as soon as it was released. Since the last one was The Final Chapter they called this one A New Beginning. They signed part 3's writer Martin Kitrosser and new comer David Cohen to write a script. They hired B movie director Danny Steinmann, who also worked on the script. Rather than try to bring back Jason they decided to make the killer in this one a copycat. Newcomer John Shepherd was signed to play Tommy Jarvis. Dick Wieand was cast as Roy/Fake Jason. His audition consisted of looking at a table and pretending that he was looking at his son's body, he never did understand why he got the job.
They shot on a shoestring budget with a non-union crew, with a deadline of less than a year in which to finish the movie. They also put in the shot of Tommy holding a knife at Pam as a setup to possibly make him a killer in another sequel. Composer Harry Manfredini returned and unlike on the previous one he had the time to compose a compleat musical score. The movie was released March 22, 1985 and made less money than the previous one. Many fans of the series felt cheated because Jason only appeared in Tommy's dream.
