Film opens with a little girl and her family at a cabin on Crystal Lake. The girl telepathically collapses a dock, which kills her abusive father. Flash forward several years. Tina, her mom, and a doctor who wants to study her telepathy regardless of the risk to her return to the cabin. She stands over the lake and tries to revive her dad, who's body is still at the bottom of the lake. She instead revives Jason Voorhees who proceeds to slaughter the horny teenagers in the cabin next door.
After part 6 made some money bringing Jason back Paramount decided that he had enough life left in him for another adventure. Frank Mancuso Jr. returned as Executive Producer. Make-up effects man John Carl Buechler as brought in to direct. A script was written that could almost be described as Carrie vs. Jason. The movie was filmed in Baldwin County, Alabama with a non-union crew under the fake title Birthday Bash.
As on some of the previous films Henry Manfredini did not have time to write a complete score. Originally they planed for him to score part of it and use some of his music from the previous ones. He ended up being completely unavailable, so Mancuso Jr. brought in Fred Mollin, who worked on the Friday the 13th TV show. Mollin wrote all of the new music which appears in the movie along side tracks from the previous ones. The movie was released on (Friday) May 13, 1988 and did respectable box office numbers.
