A GATHERING OF FAMILY MEMBERS FROM NEAR AND FAR

Before reading this I would like to ask if any Knout family members happen across this website, please contact me at jamamama@mchsi.com, as I have lost all of their emails and contact information. That means all of you in Cortland and beyond. I am the daughter of Ted, brother to Jack, Gene and Marion Knout. Please Contact me, I have missed being able to stay in touch with all of you, especially my cousins, the children of Marion.

WHERE DID THE NAME KNOUT
COME FROM? I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING
THE WEB AND HAVE COME UP
WITH SOME INTERESTING, AND
SOME DISTASTEFUL CLUES.
TO THE BEST THAT I CAN
DECIPHER SO FAR, THE WORD
KNOUT IS A RUSSIAN TERM FOR AN
INSTRUMENT USED FOR WHIPPING.
IT HAS REFERENCES AS
FAR BACK AS I COULD FIND
IN THE 1400'S. IT WAS MADE OF
RAWHIDE WITH LONG
STRIPS WHICH WOULD CUT
UP THE SKIN PRETTY BAD.
IT WAS REFERRED TO
AS THE "BLOODY KNOUT".

I ALSO FOUND
REFERENCE TO IT AS BEING MADE OF HEAVY
ROPE, WITH KNOTS IN EACH LONG STRAP.
AGAIN, USED FOR PUNISHMENT.
THAT'S THE DISTASTEFUL PART.

THE GERMANS REFERRED
TO IT AS THE KNUTA OR KNOUT,
AND SOMETIMES WITH
AN H AFTER IT. THE MEANING
IN GERMAN WAS THE SAME THOUGH.
A WHIP MADE TO
DISCIPLINE, OR IN
TIMES OF WAR, (AS LATE AS
THIS CENTURY) USED BY INFANTRY
SOLDIERS.
I AM CONTINUING MY
HUNT TO GRASP HOW "WE"
ENDED UP WITH THIS NAME.

MY SEARCH HAS BEGUN
BY LOOKING UP THE
NAME "KNOUT" IN EXCITE
SEARCH. THERE ARE TOO MANY REFERENCES
FOR ME TO INCLUDE
HERE, SO THERE IS A
LINK TO EXCITE BELOW FOR
SEARCHING THE MANY SONNETS, BALLADS,
POEMS, HISTORICAL
PIECES OUR NAME HAS BEEN
INCLUDED IN.

02-11-04 I have found some new information on some of our ancestry. It is quite interesting. It seems that one of our ancestors may have been a Czar, and maybe not such a nice one. And. due to his reign may have helped to give reason for the "Yiddish language" to have been created as a way of the Jews communicating to each other, a private language all their own.

Since I lived in Florida for a lot of my younger years (high school and beyond), I had many Jewish friends, some Orthodox, and I have heard "some" about this language of the Jews. I am looking for more information on Czar Knout, and his reign but at this time, this link is all I have been able to come up with... so far.
Yiddish Collection

Please read down pretty far into the article to find the information. At first it can be confusing, but if you read it several times you can connect the dots, and get the connection.
However, it can also be taken when the mention the Czarist Knout that they are referring to their treatment by the Russian Czar society and its treatment, one form being the use of the "knout" as an instrument of torture.
So it is confusing as to whether they are referring to the Czar Knout, or the torture.

Below is a listing of our family members thus far.
If you are a Knout, or have any information about any additional family members, please e-mail me. The list is getting larger. But I need more family pictures.
