Night At The Movies

Fantasia (1941) (Disney)
Synopsis:

A collection of animated shorts set to music.  Selections include: Dance of the Hours (performed by hippos, crocidiles, and ostriches), The Sorcerer's Apprentice, Night on Bald Mountain, Spring, and Tocatta in Fugue.  This film marks the first feature appearance of Mickey Mouse.

Availability:
    Currently on moratorium.

Miscelaneous:
Critics have called The Sorcerer's Apprentice Mickey Mouse's Citizen Kane, meaning that this short is the apex of what the mouse is all about.
A sequel will be released within the next two to three years, entitled either Fantasia 2000 or Fantasia Continued.  It will contain some of the sequences from the first film, as well as some new pieces, one of which is Pomp and Circumstance (you know, the song played at every graduation) starring Donald Duck.

MPAA Rating:
    G

My Rating:
If you are a fan of either classical music or good animation, this is a must have.  The music is performed by the Philadelphia Philharmonic, under the direction of the great Leopold Stokowski.  The animation is wonderful.  Many people do not like it because it is not the typical Disney fare, but it is in more ways than one.  Many of Walt's Silly Symphonies were preludes to this.  The basic theme behind all was to tell a story using only the animation and music.  If you feel you might not be interested, just rent it.  Be forewarned, it is about three hours long.
