Films of John

1998
This is my father
Director - Paul Quinn
Wrtier - Paul Quinn
Aidan Quinn, James Caan, Stephen Rea, John Cusack, Colm Meaney and Moya Farrelly.

A very passionate film by the Quinn brothers (starring Aidan, beautifully photographed by Declan and directed by Paul) about one man's journey into past to discover the sad secerets of his family's past. Kieran (Cann), an Irish, lonely hi-school teacher living in Chicago. Frustrated with his life, job and students who just don't care. One day, by chance he discovers an old photograph of his parents, which brings him back to Ireland, to the town where his mother grew up, and discover the story of his parents. Aidan Quinn portrays Kieran's father in the films flashbacks. John is Eddie Sharp (what a name eh!) an American Photorapher who flies all over the place taking pictures for Times. He encounters Kieran's parents one night on a beach inIreland. Requesting the copule to play American football with him. In return, he takes a photograph of the copule. The photograph that would eventually bring Kieran back to Ireland. Although John is only in the film, during the middle for about 7 minutes. It is a film that I recommand with all my heart. I saw this film at the Toronto Film Festival, hoping John would show up... But... And "It" made me cry. Enjoy it.

The film will hopefully soon, receive a theatrical release.

1997
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil
Director - Clint Eastwood (Unforgiven)
Writer - John Lee Hancock
Based on the novel by - John Berendt
Kevin Spacy, John Cusack, Jack Thompson, Irma P. Hall, Jude Law, Allison Eastwood, Paul Hipp, The Lady Chablis, Jeoffrey Lewis, Dorty Loudon, Anne Hasey, Kim Hunter, Richard Herd, Leon Rippy, Bob Guston, Michael O'hagas, Gary Anthony Williams and Tim Black.

John plays writer John Kelso who is sent by Town and Country magazine to Savannah for coverage of a Jim William (very well played by Spacy) Christmas party. Following the party Williams was found in his study with his lover (Law) lying dead on the floor, So Williams, now charged with first degree murder asks John to help with his case by digging out information, in exchange for the book right to his story. So now John an outsider is force to get involved... Based on the very succesful true crime novel by John Berendt. Director Clint Eastwood (Unforgiven, Bridges of Madison County) was blamed for his adoptation of the novel, for not being able to bring out all of the unique and wonderful charcters that made the novel so special. But the film is still well acted. I liked John's performance in the film, and I also read and enjoyed the book. I now want to plan a trip to Savannah.

Available on DVD, LD and for rent on VHS from Warner Bro.

1997
Anastasia
Directors - Don Bluth and Gary Goldman
Writers - Susan Gauthier, Bruce Graham, Bob Itzudiker, Moni White.
Voice Talents - Meg Ryan, John Cusack, Kelsey Grammer, Hank Azaria, Christopher Lloyd and Angela Lansbury.

Fox's first animated feature, based (supposivley) on the story of Anastasia, a Russian Princess who in an escape from Rasputin loses her memory. Now Years later, all grown up (in an orphanage) she maked a trip to Paris with the help of con-man Dimitri who belives she is the lost princess, and plans to make a fortune for bringing her back to her family. Now, of course the two fall in love. Wrestle with the evil forces of Rasputin who wants Anastasia dead. Of course... The animation is in no comparison with Disney's, in my opinon, and watch out for Anastasia (dub by Meg Ryan) listen to her voice as she talks then sing, listen to the difference. However, I thought John was superb as the voice of Dimitri. John said that he did the movie in welcome of his niece (Joan's new born baby boy).

Available to own on VHS from Fox.

1997
Con Air
Director - Simon West
Writer - Scott Rosenberg
Nicholas Cage, John Malkovich, John Cusack, Ving Rhames, Steve Buscemi, Mykel T. Williamson, Colm Meaney, Rachel Ticotin and Dave Chappelle.

Cameron Poe (Cage) a former ranger, is put in Jail for manslaughter, in which he was defending his wife in a druken fight. Now 7 years later, he is paroled, and guess which ariline he decides to fly with, a plane consist all members of "America's Most Wanted" (They're all being shipped to a new prison) The group led by Virus (Malkovich) of course, hijacks the plane, and plans a new destination. Cameron will have to rise up to the task, and save the day. John plays Larkin, a Marshal in charged of the shipping operation. It's not a bad Bruckhimer production But I have no idea why John made this movie.

Available to own on DVD, LD and VHS from Hollywood pictures.

1997
Grosse Pointe Blank
Director - George Armitage (Miami Blues)
Writers - Tom Jankiewicz, D.V. DeVincentis, Steve Pink and John Cusack
John Cusack, Minnie Driver, Dan Aykroyd, Alan Arkin, Joan Cusack, Jeremy Piven, Hank Azaria, Mitchell Ryan, Michael Cudlitz, Benny Urquidez, Barbara Harris and Ann Cusack.

Martin (John), a stressed-out professioanl killer invited to attend his 10 year hi-school reunion. Besides not sure of what to tell his classmates about his field of experties, he'll have to reunite once again, with Debi (Driver) the girl he ditched 10 years ago on prom night. Martin, not so sure what to do, gets advice from his shrink (Arkin) - who is affraid of Martin and is constantly refusing to work with him - into going. So Martin decides to revisit memory lane one more time (there is also a job there waiting for him to finish)... But that's interfered by fellow assassin Grocer (Aykroyd) who is trying constantly to convince Martin into joining his union of hitmen. It's a very funny dark comedy-romance. John is so loveable in this role. And also note that Joan is just brilliant as the overworked paranoid secreatry (Thanks Sara). I am sure it's what got so many of us addicted. So if you haven't seen this film, and call your self a John supporter, get up, and bang your head against wall three times, also, remember to rent it.

Available to own on DVD, LD and VHS from Hollywood pictures.

1996
City Hall
Director - Harold Becker (Malice)
Writers - Paul Sharder, Nicholas Pileggi, Bo Goldman and Ken Lipper.
Al Pacino, John Cusack, Bridget Fonda, Danny Aiello, David Paymer, Martin Landau, Anthony Franciosa, Lindsay Duncan, and Nestor Serrano.

John as an idealistic deputy mayor, working for the very charistimatic NYC mayor played by Paicno. The death of a heroic cop, six year boy and a drug dealer sents John in discovery of the corruption and decit in the political world of the Big Apple. With strong supporting cast which includes Bridget Fonda as police union lawyer romantically involved with John's charcter, and Dan Aiello as a Booklyn loving boss. I enjoyed this movie quite a lot. It's nice seeing John act beside Pacino in a great performance.

Available to own on DVD, LD and VHS from Columbia pictures.

1994
Bullets over Broadway
Director - Woody Allen (Annie Hall)
Writers - Woody Allen, Douglas McGrath
Dianne Wiest, John Cusack, Jennifer Tilly, Chazz Palminteri, Rob Reiner, Tracy Ullman, Mary-Louise Parker, Jack Warden, Joe Viterelli, Jim Broadbent Harvey Fierstein and Annie-Joe Edwards.

Set in Broadway in the 1920's considerd one of Woody's best works, stars John as David Shayne, a struggling writer, trying to get his Broadway play in the works. Sells it to a mobster boss, but in return will have to cast boss's unintelligent, no-talent mistress (Tilly) in a part. Only to find his (lousy) play, saved by a hit-man (Palminteri) sent to protect Tilly. An ensemble cast which inlcudes a great Oscar winning performance by Diane Wiest as a Aging diva (think Norma in Sunset Blvd). A very funny and delightful film. I especially like the park bench scenes with John and Diane Wiest.

Available to own on LD, and VHS from Miramax.

1994
Road to Wellville
Director - Alan Parker (Evita)
Writer - Alan Parker
Anthony Hopkins, Bridget Fonda, Matthew Brodrick, John Cusack, Dana Carvey, Michael Lerner, Colm Meaney, John Neville, Lara Flunn Boyle, and Traci Lind.

John Harvey Kellogg(Hopkins) has a turn-of-the-centry health senatorium with hectic rules. Brodrick and Fonda play a wealthy copule who goes to the senatorium to find Kelloggs's cure, but instead get sexual frustration and anal humilations. John plays a person who invested a bunch of money in making corn flakes, the rest of the plot you have to figure out by yourself. An interesting and bizzare film. Although I personnally didn't find the movie very joyable. However I really digged that hat John was wearing in the film.

Available to own on LD, and VHS from Columbia pitures.

1993
Money for Nothing

Writers - Ramon Menendez, Carol Sobieski and Tom Musca
John Cusack, Michael Madson, Benicio Del Toro, Michael Rapaport, Debi Mazar, Fionnula Flanagan, Maury Chaykin, James Gandolfini, and Elizabeth Bracco.

Based on a true story. John plays unemloyed longshorman who finds over a milliondollars in the middle of the road. Instead of skipping town right away with the money,he leaves a trail behind for a detective who's on his tail. He gets the mob to help launder the money for him. Also turning to his ex-girlfriend for help. John didn't like how the movie turned out, but I think it's still one enjoyable ride.

1993
Map of the Human Heart
Director - Vincent Ward

Young Eskimo Avik(Lee) tells Map Maker (Cusack) the story of him and his lover Albertine(Parillaud), about how they struggled with racism in a white world. The two were childhood sweethearts, gets split up. Reunite during the WW2 in Dresden. Except now Albertine is married to some one else. I didn't like the movie all that much, I found it kind of boring, and plus John was only in the beginning and the end of the film.

Trying to restore his life, James drags himself all around town, and thinks about what he could do. John plays one oh his drinking buddies, 5 minutes of screen time. I didn't like it, I thought the movie was pointless and irretating.

John's first film with director Woody Allen, not one of the great Woody films. The plot seems to be all over the place. Allen plays a loner clerk, waken up in the middle of the night to help hunt down a serial killer. The film set in a old European riverside town. Beautifully shot in Black and White by Carlo Di Palma. John plays a philosophy college student who is a frequent goer of the town's brothel fooling around with Prostitues played by Lili Tomlin, Jodie Foster and Kathy Bates.

Joe(Doe) and Sam(Horovitz) are on a mission to bring the ashes of a fellow biker to Nevada. On their way they meet up with a lot of eccentrics and stay at a lot of cheap motels. I haven't seen this film yet, but I hear it's a 90's wannabe EASY RIDER.

Griffin Mill (Robbins) a young studio exec who is the head suspect for a murder investigation, at the same time he is worried about getting fired by the studios. Director Altman (Nashville, M.A.S.H.) shows us the dark side of the movie bussiness. John as himself in the film, I hear that that's the way John really is in real life. But you be the judge. I recomande this film, not just to see John, but it is truly a masterpiece. One of Altman's best.

Cameos - Susan Sarandon, James Spader, John Cusack, Fred Ward, Pamela Reed.

Robbins first feature as writer/director plays Bob Roberts a folk-singing, millionaire campaigning for a seat in the Senate. Doing anything in order to get elected. Shot in the style of a documentary, Bob Roberts is a great observation of the cynical world of Politics and Media. A very good film. John has a small part as the host of a popular live show (like SNL). The movie was fun to watch, and I especially enjoyed John being real mean to Bob the canidate.

Available on LD and VHS form Live Entertainment.

1991
True Colors
Director - Herbert Ross
Writer - Kevin Wade
John Cusack, James Spader, Imogen Stubbs, Mandy Patinkin, Richard Widmark.

Peter(Cusack) and Tim(Spader) are law school buddies that take different paths. Tim the strait narrow one works for the Justice Department while Peter "the manipulator", does whatever he can to get a head to his goal in becoming a Senator. Of course later on in the film, Tim is forced to investigate and destroy Peter. A good study of Friendship and Politics. This is one of my personal favourites. I feel sorry for John's charcter every time. I especially liked his speech near the end of the movie.

Available on LD, and VHS from Paramount.

1990

Lilly(Huston), Roy(Cusack) and Myra(Bening) are three con artists, struggling to get a head and stay in the life their acustomed to. The three stuck in an interesting relationship. Mother, Son and Son's Lover. Eventually it all boils down to TRUTH. The story is pretty complicated. Very good adoptation from the novel. I really like the movie, and John's charcter is very different compared to the other characters he's played.

Writer - Cameron Crowe
John Cusack, Ione Skyle, John Mahoney, Joan Cusack, Lily Taylor, Richard Portnow, Pamela Segall, Jason Gould, Loren Dean, Bebe Neuwirth, Aimee, Brooks, Eric Stoltz, Chynna Phillips, Joanna Frank.

John Cusack in one of his most famous roles as Lloyd Dobler, who decides to ask out the girl of his dreams Diane Court (Ione Skyle), who is smart talented and has a scholarship to study in England. The film is about how the two of them get together and deal with the problems they face as a young copule. Also with Diane's father investigated by the IRS. A very good study of Young Relationships. I love this movie, it's a really romatic and sweet movie. I especially loved the scene where Lloyd holds the boombox outside under Diane's window playing their song. So romantic. I wished a guy did that for me.

Available on LD, and VHS from Fox.

Fat Man and Little Boy

The creation of the first atomic bomb brought tensions between J. Robert Oppenheimer(Schultz) and his military employer, General Leslie Groves(Newman) Also the people involved in the project have conflects dealing morality. About whether it's right or wrong to create such a deadly weapon. John plays one of the Physicist. I semi-like the movie. But I read somewhere that John was very proud of his perfomance in the film. And I really can't stand watching John SUFFER...

As they were doing small jobs for money, they accedantly receive an important video reavealing a sex scandal involving a presendential candidate. So of course the get chase around by a mob of hitmen. At the same time trying to deal with their recent success with videomaking. It's a very bizzare film. Very funny and enjoyable. John has a quite mustache, or dosen't he? On the way they rescue Demi Moore's charcter who's beening chased by gangs furious that she stole their money. She then joins the bunch and causes everyone a load of trouble while traveling abroad.
