Keating on Victoria's Secret: 'It's Chemistry'
By Meredith Berlin
Daytime is rife with stories of actors who play hot lovers on screen, but can't stand each other off. Charles Keating, who recently won the Emmy award as Outstanding Actor for his work as Carl on "Another World", is one of the fortunate daytime actors who actually likes and respects his leading lady.
"You can't hide with the camera on your face," Keating says, referring to the chemistry between Victoria Wyndham (Rachel) and himself. "The audience would see the truth, and I don't believe I'm capable enough as an actor to disguise any bad feelings."
Keating says he and Wyndham "lock horns over things, and we are as stubborn as two people can be. She has such a brilliant mind, and she's a very astute woman on an awful lot of levels. I have great respect for her. We trust each other and we bring out the best in each other."
So much so that Wyndham and Keating developed their own play, "Couplets," with which they've toured around the country.
Keating, who is a Tony-nominated actor, was pleased to note that this year's Emmys, in particular, seemed to offer nominations and awards to deserving actors. Too often daytime is criticized for casting pretty faces with feeble acting abilities. Not this year.
As for his trademark ponytail, Keating has no intention of cutting it off. When asked if the producers requested he lose it, Keating immediately became serious.
"It was my choice to grow it and it will be my choice to cut it. There are lines that we draw." What does the audience think? Keating muses, "I think the majority say, 'Don't cut it.' Although I supposed it is something to see an old fart like me with long grey hair."
