Major Enemies: X-Men, Generation X
The Phalanx is a collective of techno-organic beings, once human (and some even deceased!), that have been merged into a global conscience in an attempt to extinguish the threat of the "mutant menace". The Phalanx were originally the remains of the techno-organic being Warlock (see Douglock), and the intellect of long-time X-Men foe Stephen Lang. Lang eventually bought others into the collective, including Cameron Hodge. The Phalanx were seeking out new young mutants in an effort to absorb them into the collective, but these mutants were rescued by Banshee, Emma Frost, and Sabretooth. These young mutants eventually became Generation X. The Phalanx were defeated by the combined effort of all the mutant teams, as well as Douglock and Lang, who rebelled after he discovered the Phalanx were planning to exterminate all life on Earth, not just the mutants, and repopulate with their own kind. Recently the Phalanx have returned, and joined forces with the Uncreated.

Over the years Jean has "died" many times, first when she was replaced by the Phoenix entity who actually saved her from dying whilst piloting a space shuttle. Then Jean was believed to have died on the moon during battle with the Imperial Guard, but it was actually the Phoenix entity that died - the real Jean had actually been hidden in a cocoon by the Phoenix. After her return (which was thanks to Reed Richards who released her from the cocoon) Jean and the original members of the X-Men formed X-Factor, and it wasn't until the Muir Island Saga that she returned to the X-Men. Jean was then believed to have been killed by Sentinels during their attack on the Hellions, but she survived by transferring her consciousness into the comatose body of Emma Frost). She is an extremely powerful telepath, second only to Xavier in her abilities.

Lorna Dane's powers first manifested thanks to the intervention of the Machinesmith and Mesmero when she was a teenager. She was hypnotised into believing she was the daughter of Magneto due to her sharing similar powers with him. She was told the truth by the X-Men however, that her real parents had actually died in a plane crash and that she was not Magneto's daughter. This enabled her to break free of Mesmero's control, and she joined the X-Men. Originally having a romance with Iceman, she eventually fell for Havok. Neither she nor Havok were interested in the super-hero life so they both retired to pursue their common interest of geophysics. Polaris was later possessed by the Marauder known as Malice and joined the Marauders, albeit under Malice's control. She managed to break free, however, but was captured and taken to the Savage Land where she met her sister, Zaladane. Lorna was stripped of her powers but in turn she gained super-strength and durability. She also had the side effect of generating negative energy which, when she had gone to Muir Island to search for Havok, drew the Shadow King to her. Regaining her original powers after the Shadow King was defeated, she was given an offer to join the government-sponsored mutant team, X-Factor, which she accepted.

Over the years, Xavier has suffered many tragedies: the death of Thunderbird, his inability to save Illyana Rasputin from the Legacy Virus, and the subsequent betrayal of Colossus who joined Magneto's Acolytes. All his pent-up frustration and anger led to the creation of Onslaught. Recently, Xavier has been arrested by the US government for crimes committed as Onslaught and has been incarcerated in a facility run by Bastion's Operation: Zero Tolerance. He was kidnapped from this facility by the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants whom the X-men were forced to team with to defeat the newly sentient Cerebro.

Proteus was the mutant son of geneticist Moira MacTaggert. Developing his powers as a young boy, he could not control them and was driven mad. He was placed in a confinement cell by his mother in an attempt to stop him destroying himself, but he escaped. Needing to feed off human host's that he possessed, Proteus eventually possessed the body of his father Joe and went on a murderous rampage through Scotland. Having drained his father's body of energy, leaving it a dessicated husk, he reverted to his true form and was killed by the X-Men when his essence was scattered throughout the world. In an attempt to gain a weapon of extreme power, A.I.M. sent Harness and Piecemeal to absorb up all of Proteus' essence so that they could reconstruct him. Merging with Piecemeal (a mutant who had absorbed all of Proteus' energy), the new Proteus wanted to reshape the world in order to find happiness. He was convinced by Jean Grey that he wouldn't be happy this way, Proteus once again agreed to disperse his energy across the world, ending his existence once more.

She did have a son but shortly after she and Cyclops broke up when Jean Grey was revealed to be alive (thought long dead after the Phoenix Saga). Sinister kidnapped baby Nathan and sent the Marauders to kill Madelyne. She escaped and teamed with the X-Men shortly before their "death" in Dallas. After their return to Earth and being based in Australia's outback, S'ym corrupted Madelyne, which eventually led to her becoming the Goblin Queen when the Inferno began. She battled both the X-Men and X-Factor as she sought to sacrifice her child to begin a demon invasion of Earth. After failing to bring this about, she attempted to kill herself and the X-teams, but only she died in the explosion. Madelyne has since returned, being psionically recreated by Nate Grey, and has become an apprentice to Selene, who has inducted her into the Inner Circle of the newly reformed Hellfire Club.

Puck
Real Name: Eugene Milton Judd
First Appearance: Alpha Flight Vol 1 #1
Group Affiliation: Alpha Flight, formerly Beta Flight, Outcasts
Known Allies: Wolverine, Domino
Puck was born around the turn of the century and lived as a soldier of fortune until he was commissioned to steal the Black Blade of Baghdad. The Blade was actually a prison for an ancient sorceror called Raazer, and Puck accidentally freed him. He was able to trap Raazer once more using some ancient mysticism and the light from his own life force. However, this caused him to shrink to about 3' in height and to this day causes him constant pain. It has also granted him immortality. Eventually joining Alpha Flight, Puck had many adventures with the team until he was captured by the Dreamqueen and imprisoned in her dimension whilst she left to conquer Earth. He eventually returned but fell ill due to the effects of the Dream Dimension. Whilst in hospital he was captured and subject to genetic experiments by the Master. Rescued by Alpha Flight, he was reverted to his normal form by Sasquatch, but was also young and had extremely dense flesh. After the break-up of Alpha Flight, he returned to his soldier of fortune ways. With the recent reformation of Alpha Flight, he has rejoined the team.
